FIVS Update Greg Hodson May 6 th, 2015

Agenda Reminder Scientific and Technical Committee Meeting Election of Officers

Reminder FIVS created in 1951 in Paris International trade association – serving wine, beer and spirits producers Restructured in 2002 – consensus, IGO monitoring Strategic Plans from 2003 onwards Restructured again in Working Groups to drive strategic plan Scientific and Technical Committee (STC) For more information, see last year’s presentation

STC Work Plan Highlights STC met in Brussels 4/27/2015 Co-chaired by Greg Hodson and Jonathan Breach Major work items: – Winemaking substance Codex – good progress – Position papers – refresh existing, draft new Philosophy of additive usage in winemaking Good fining practice guidelines Nutrition/energy labelling Ingredient labeling 12 Regulatory principles, additions Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

STC Work Plan Highlights cont’d “Good Laboratory Practice” Contingency Planning/Crisis Management FIVS/OENOPPIA Guidelines for Wine Producers and their Suppliers Scientific Framework for Application of the 12 Principles

Winemaking substance Codex Currently “FIVS APAC” Comprehensive listing of permitted winemaking substances around the world – Synonyms – INS, CAS Reg. numbers, JECFA evaluations, – Technological Justification – Etc. Additives section completed in draft Processing aids well underway.

Philosophy of substance usage in winemaking Paper produced and approved by consensus Argues in favor of the flexibility of GMP as a usage criterion vs numerical limits Consistent with FIVS and Tbilisi Principle #1 Submitted to Codex Additives Committee as a Conference Room Document To be presented later in this meeting.

Technical Application of Principles FIVS endorsed the Principles in 2013 WWTG used the same Principles to arrive at the Tbilisi Statement of 11 Principles STC now charged to work within FIVS on technical application of the Principles E.g. Principle 4 only says a common system of units should be used for limits, not which system should be used Since the International Technical Forum and the FIVS STC have the same objectives, it makes sense to work together on this exciting project This is our agenda for this week!

Election of Officers At its General Assembly on 4/29, FIVS made the following appointments to its Presidential Council: – President – Greg Hodson (Gallo) – Vice President – Ron Fondiller (Constellation) – Secretary – Bruno Kessler (AFED) – Chairman – Jim Finkle (Constellation – immediate Past-President)

THANK YOU!
