Tujuan Penelitian  Measuring Leanness of Manufacturing Systems: “how lean the system is.”  Identifying Leanness Target : “how lean the system should be”  Identifying Directions of Improvement : “How to achieve the leanness target”

VSM (Value Stream Maps) – (1)  Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a graphical tool that maps out the process of a system with a selected granulation in a selected scope.  visualized the value-adding activities and wastes in the system  The current VSM graphically shows the level of leanness of the current system,  the future VSM, serving as a target of improvement, is the benchmark of the leanness level  weakness of the VSM is that “cost” is not shown explicitly, since it is created strictly based on the time frames of the processes 

Seven Value Stream Mapping Tools 1. Process activity mapping 2. Supply chain response matrix 3. Production variety funnel 4. Quality filter mapping 5. Demand amplification mapping 6. Decision point analysis 7. Physical structure mapping

Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) 1  Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a methodology developed for performance measurement.  features of the basic DEA modeling 1)DEA evaluates “Efficiency” of previous operations without outsourcing for benchmark. 2) DEA is capable of analyzing multiple input/output variables. 3) DEA provides “dimension-free” efficiency scores that can be easily compared.

Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) 2  components of a DEA Model 1) Decision Making Units (DMUs): objects of the observation 2) Input Variables: resources consumed by a DMU 3) Output Variables: products or services delivered by a DMU 4) Transformation Processes: the procedure that transforms inputs into outputs

Leanness Measure based on Data Envelope Analysis (DEA) DEA -> methodology to measure performance Actual DMU = Cost,Time(Added Value) + Cost, Time (Non Added Value) Ideal DMU = Cost,Time(Added Value) + Cost, Time (Non Added Value) Note : Typical VSM not include Cost and Value Need support from additional data

Leanness Measure from VSM Sample : Value Stream with 3 production process Value Added

 Time, Cost, Value, Value Added Time, Value Added Cost Leanness Measure from VSM  DEA-leaness Calculation  DEA-leaness Compare

Conclusion  Value Stream Mapping is the most popular tools for lean implementation.  With DEA, Value Stream Mapping can be quantified, resulting leanness score indicates “how lean the system is”, or “how much leaner it can become”  Leanness Score of VSM can be applied to different types of value stream, including manufacturing and non manufacturing sectors(such as Supply Chain)  Leanness Score also can be valuated from complex system, such as Supply Chain, even tough collection additional data can require much more effort.  Leanness Score Implies how much waste currently exists in the system and further identify improvement opportunities.
