AIM: to what extent have Viking and the Mongol cultures had a lasting impact on the world?

AIM: why do Viking and Mongol cultures not dominate the societies and cultures of Eurasia?

The Vikings and the Mongols both conquered and colonized numerous foreign peoples. Take careful note of the following maps!

Vikings Kievan Rus Normandy Viking Raids

Mongols

As a consequence, one would think that they managed to impose their culture on all conquered peoples leaving evidence for us to find.

Evidence of the Mongol Language WHERE IS THE MONGOLIAN LANGUAGE SPOKEN?

Evidence of Scandinavian Languages HOW ABOUT SCANDINAVIAN LANGUAGES?

Why did they not impose their own languages on the people they conquered? We can ask the same question about religion.

Population of Russia: 140 million Ukraine: 50 million United Kingdom: 60 million France: 60 million Finland: 5 million China: 1.3 billion Korea (N and S): 70 million Iran (Persia): 70 million One theory

Population of Sweden: 9 million Norway: 5 million Denmark: 5 million Mongolia: 3 million

They did not have enough people to eradicate the cultures of the peoples they had conquered. Instead, they were assimilated into the cultures of the peoples they had conquered. What does assimilation mean? Is it similar to cultural diffusion?

Mini Fin

Which culture, that of the Vikings or the Mongols, has had the biggest influence on you? Why?

Google Search Vikings: 207,000 English language hits Mongols: 6,250 English language hits Viking Cartoons: 169 hits Mongol Cartoons: 13 hits Vikings USA: 990 hits Mongols USA: 80 hits Why these results? Answer

Why? There is a much closer cultural connection between the descendents of the Vikings and the USA than there is between the USA and the descendents of the Mongols. In addition the descendents of the Vikings are greater exporters of culture than the descendents of the Mongols.
