Welcome. Kindly get a crossword puzzle, a marker, and 8 notecards. No need to use the marker or notecards yet, let those sit beside you for now. (Please do not color yet.) Work independently on the crossword puzzle until we are all here and settled. After 5 minutes, you will work with a partner on the crossword puzzle. Let’s keep the noise to a dull roar, I will be walking around to make sure we are all contributing equally.

As you may have already guessed, the text we are going to study takes place during WWII. Let’s go over the crossword puzzle answers together. Who has 1?

7 Across: ADOLF HITLER Leader of Germany During WWII “Hitler told Himmler that it was not enough for the Jews simply to die; they must die in agony. What was the best way to prolong their agony? Himmler turned the problem over to his advisers, who concluded that a slow, agonizing death could be brought about by placing Jewish prisoners in freight cars in which the floors were coated with...quicklime...which produced excruciating burns. The advisers estimated that it would take four days for the prisoners to die, and for that whole time the freight cars could be left standing on some forgotten siding.... Finally it was decided that the freight cars should be used in addition to the extermination camps. ----Robert Payne, The Life and Death of Adolf Hitler”. One Word reaction to the quote on your card please…

The Jew uses every possible means to undermine the racial foundations of a subjugated people. (Book 1 Chap 11) -Adolf Hitler (Mein Kampf) One word on how the quote makes you feel.

Please set your cards aside. We will come back to them. Let me introduce you to the Book Thief. We will read Chapter 1 today, and then we will do a little writing. While I read, I want you to ponder the following questions: Is it okay to do something illegal, if it helps someone else? Why/Why not? How much would you risk to save the life of a person you don’t know?

Pick one of the following and compose a letter in your journal. Use all of the words you wrote down at least once. This is for points, so please do your best to mind grammar, punctuation and make the writing significant. You will have 20 minutes to work. Your neighbor can’t help you, please if you have a question, let me know. This is a quiet study time. You will turn in your word cards and your journals a the end of class!!!
