Saint-Tropez Maria Galvez, Andrea Abdala

Location: St.-Tropez is a coastal town on the French Riviera, in the Provence-Alpes- Côte d'Azur region of southeastern France

L’histoire de Saint Tropez : Saint Tropez was born in Pisa (Tuscany), A brilliant officer, he was chosen by the emperor, to hold the charge of steward of his palace. He was converted by Saint-Paul while he was his custodian. Torpetius professed his faith during a feast organized by the Emperor, who condemned him to death. But the wild beasts laid themselves down at his feet, the pillar he was chained to, to be flogged, collapsed and killed the executioner. To put an end to it, he was beheaded. Torpetius' head is still kept in a chapel dedicated to his name, in Pisa. Every year, a group of Tropezians set off on a pilgrimage to Pisa on April the 29th, the day he was put to death. His body was laid in a boat with cockerel and a dog (symbols of malevolence in the Roman bestiary), at the mouth of the River Arno. Borne along by the ligurian current, the boat with its precious load miraculously unharmed, ran on to the shores which were later to be named Saint- Tropez, on May 17th, 68 A.D.

To protect itself, saint Tropez became a fortified village with 4 towers : La tour du Portalet, La tour de la Vieille, La tour Jarlier and La Tour Suffren. La tour Vieille stands in the historic area La Ponche. It watched over the sea entrance as well as La Tour du Portalet in front at 80M distance.

L’économie The main economic resource of Saint- Tropez is tourism. The city is well known for the Hôtel Byblos and for Les Caves du Roy, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World. It has many beautiful beaches that offer rental of surf boards, kayaks, etc. The town was the site of various associated trades, including fishing, cork, wine, and wood. Its role as a commercial port declined, and it is now (2013) primarily a tourist spot and a base for many well known sail regattas.
