“An Unwanted Grace” 1 Corinthians 1:18-25

My Hope: 1. We will recognize areas of our lives where we are avoiding God’s grace and understand the reasons why. 2. We will all the more desire, embrace, and enjoy God’s grace with thankfulness and humility.

Grace Defined: Unearned, undeserved, and absolutely necessary favor from God, that can empower and motivate us to live a transformed life for God.

The Corinth Church- A “Graced” Church: 1Cor 1:4-9 I always thank God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched in every way—in all your speaking and in all your knowledge... Therefore you do not lack any spiritual... He will keep you strong to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.

The Corinth Church- A Troubled Church: 1Cor 1:10-12 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought. My brothers, some from Chloe's household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. What I mean is this: One of you says, "I follow Paul"; another, "I follow Apollos"; another, "I follow Cephas"; still another, "I follow Christ."

Our Main Text Today: 1Cor 1:18-25 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand miraculous signs and

Our Main Text Today: 1Cor 1:18-25 Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength.

1. We think God’s grace is too simple: 1Cor 1:18-21 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

1. We think God’s grace is too simple: The message of the cross is about God’s grace. God’s grace will bring the ultimate division. The message the cross is not just info, but power! Our own “smarts” can block us from God’s saving grace. We often over-complicate our life of grace with God. God’s grace can only be received by faith. God’s grace confronts us with our foolishness & pride.

2. We think God’s grace is too weak: 1Cor 1:22 Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength.

2. We think God’s grace is too weak: “Miraculous signs”- the majestic, powerful, practical. The world demands us to work for and earn merits. Our pride demands us to work for and earn merits. Our pride demands others tow work for and earn merits. We don’t believe God would love us freely. We don’t want to lose control of being in charge. God’s gracious call can awaken any one of us. God’s grace confronts us with our weakness & pride. God’s grace is wrapped up in the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus alone can give us power to overcome evil. Jesus alone can give us true wisdom about life.

“God’s Own Fool” by Michael Card It seems I've imagined Him all of my life As the wisest of all of mankind But if God's Holy wisdom is foolish to men He must have seemed out of His mind For even His family said He was mad And the priest said a demon's to blame But God in the form of this angry young man Could not have seemed perfectly sane

“God’s Own Fool” by Michael Card (Chorus) When we in our foolishness thought we were wise He played the fool and He opened our eyes When we in our weakness believed we were strong He became helpless to show we were wrong So we follow God's own Fool For only the foolish can tell Believe the unbelievable Come be a fool as well

“God’s Own Fool” by Michael Card Come lose your life for a carpenter's son For a madman who died for a dream Then you'll have the faith His first followers had And you'll feel the weight of the beam So surrender the hunger to say you must know Have the courage to say, "I believe" For the power of paradox opens your eyes And blinds those who say they can see
