Lesson 3 Math's and your future Teacher notes: Run through the PowerPoint to slide 7 and then organise the class into groups of 3 or 4. The following slides then test their number skills in various real life settings. Pupils will need paper to do calculations on, or if you like there are two printable worksheets/slides included in the presentation. Give pupils 5 mins to work out a solution, compare group solutions, then run through the answer before moving on to the next slide.

You are asked to provide 90 buns for the school concert. You know 1 egg will make 6 buns and you have ½ dozen eggs in the fridge. How many more eggs do you need to buy? If a bun costs 5p to make what is the cost of 90 buns? The Cook Task 2 90/6 = 15 eggs to make 90 buns. 15 – 6 = 9 more eggs are needed. Cost of buns: 90 x £0.05 = 9 x £0.50 = £4.50

You can earn £10,000 per year before you start to pay tax. Your salary is £16,000 per year and pay tax at 20%. Your employer is stopping you £50 per week. Is this fair? Paying tax Task 3 £16000 – £10000 = £6000 £6000 x 20% = £1200 Per month: £1200/12 = £100 £100/4 = £25 per week. Your are paying twice the rate of tax.

You are buying a car priced at £6000. For a quick sale the car salesman has offered you a 10% discount. He says it’s a bargain at £5600 for cash. Do you buy? Buying a car Task 4 10% of £6000 = £600 £ £600 = £5,400 £5600 – 5400 = £200 too much. The salesman has just ripped You off big time by £200

You have been asked to quote for fitting some skirting board around a rectangular shaped room. The measurements are 5m by 4m. How much board do you need? You buy 3m lengths at a costs of £7.50. What would be the cost? The Joiner Task 5 Perimeter = 5m + 4m + 5m + 4m = 18m Number of lengths = 18/3 = 6 Cost = 6 x £7.50 = £42 + £3 = £45

Your job is selling cars, but its a low basic wage. You get bonus payments based on your sales figures. A bonus of 4% is paid to you for sales of £ per month, which you did last month. The boss spreads your bonus over 3 months and pays you £260 per month. How much bonus should you get per month. Your Bonus Task 6 Bonus, 4% of £ = 4 x £240 = £960 Bonus over 3 months, £960/3 = £320 per month. You are under paid by £60 per month.

You need to buy felt tip pens for the art faculty. Each pack costs £7.50 and you have a budget of £170. How many packs can you buy? Purchasing Task 7 Costs are: 10 packs = 10 x £7.50 = £75 So 20 = 2 x £75 = 2 x £ x £5 = £150 Spare: £170 - £150 = £20 2 more packs = 2 x £7.50 = Number of packs: 22

You need to ensure a patient takes three tables every four hours for the next five days. How many tablets will be prescribed? The Nurse Task 8 Daily frequency = 24hour/4hours = 6 times Daily tablets = 6 x 3 = 18 tablets in one day. Number of tablets for 5 days = 5 x 18 = 38 5 x 18 = 5x10 + 5x8 = = 90 tablets for five days.
