Mass movement is when material moves down a slope due to the pull of gravity. Soil creep and slumping are 2 types of mass movement.

Erosion and Mass Movement
Rockfalls happen when blocks of rock break loose from a steep slope and tumble through the air. As they fall, these rocks crash into other rocks and knock.

Mass Wastage By Diana L. Duckworth Rustburg High School Campbell County, VA

Mass Movement (Wastage) Loose soil material moves downhill –large masses –caused by gravity Factors affecting mass movement –Steep slopes accelerate movement –Lots of moisture provides lubricant

Talus - piles of debris at base of cliff

Columnar Joints & Talus Devil’s Postpile, California Talus at base of slope Process: rock fall Columnar joints in basalt.

Rock slides & rock fall. Watch out for fallen rock!

Mudflow in Alaska

Slumps - mass of soil rotates down steep slope

Gros Ventre Landslide

Frank Slide, Canada

Soil Creep Slowest, most common Notice how the layers at the top are leaning downslope.

Why is this tree trunk curved? How did these rocks get in the stream? Landslides & erosion removes small particles. Creep moves soil & roots downslope & tree grows up toward light.
