Erik Guttman <erik.guttman@partner.samsung.com> Session 1 Presentation Title 3GPP WORK ON 5G Presenter Erik Guttman <erik.guttman@partner.samsung.com> Session Session #6.2: Strategic Topic #2: 5G Document Name/Version GSC20_Session#6_5G_Erik_ETSI Rev 0 Submission/Revision date: 19 April 2016

Outline of Presentation 2 Outline of Presentation By/ Erik Guttman 3GPP TSG SA Chairman Consultant for Samsung R&D Institute, UK (ETSI member) Overview IMT-2020 Submission Plan Current 3GPP 5G Activities Expectations

Overview (1 of 2)

Overview (2 of 2)

IMT-2000 Submission Plan [of June 2015]

IMT-2000 Submission Plan [of Mar 2016]

Current 3GPP 5G Activities – RAN (1 of 2) Approved Study Item on Requirements and Deployment Scenarios for Next Generation Radio Access Technologies (RP-152257) TR 38.913 identifies the initial set of scenarios and KPIs, providing a good basis for technial work to start in Working Groups Q2 2016. Additional scenarios and KPIs will be discussed at TSG RAN#72 (June 2016) The 3GPP submission to IMT-2020 (aka 5G) will include “New Radio of 5G“ (aka NR) and enhanced LTE. The actual formal submission structure remains to be determined. NR shall eventually address all requirements and use cases identified in the RAN study. A study was approved (RP-160671). Forward Compatibility is a key feature in NR to allow different features to be added without sacrificing optimality.

Current 3GPP 5G Activities – RAN (2 of 2) Prioritization of RAN requirements and scenarios has been deferred until approval of Release 15 work items. One exception is due to RAN-SA coordination: A decision is sought by Dec 2016 on the goals & objectives of Next Generation Architecture work. This may force some prioritization of RAN aspects – e.g. whether to support NR standalone operation in Rel-15, and if so for which scenarios. Channel Modeling Progress has been made on the TR, Scenarios, Requirements and Methodology. Timeline and Phasing There will be two phases for the normative work. Phase 1 (ASN.1 freeze Sep 2018): an ‘urgent commercial subset‘ of features (TBD). Phase 2 (Stage 3 freeze Dec 2019, ASN.1 freeze Mar 2020): for IMT-2020 submission, addresses all identified usecases and requirements

Current 3GPP 5G Activities – SA (1 of 2) Stage 1 ‘SMARTER‘ studies on Services and Markets Technology Enablers Studies contain • Use Cases • Scenarios • Potential Requirements Studies will complete June 2016

Current 3GPP 5G Activities – SA (2 of 2) Stage 2 study on Next Generation Architecture Identifies a range of Key Issues and Solutions. Addresses the requirements under study in SA1 and additional Architecture requirements. Will complete in 2016. Stage 2 study of Security for Next Generation System Initiated in March 2016.

Current 3GPP 5G Activities – PRE-5G Already in Release 13 features completed that are relevant to addressing 5G objectives. More will complete in Release 14. Examples (RAN) Proximity Services Enhancement (13, 14) Internet of Things RATs (NB-IoT, enhanced LTE, EC-GSM-IoT) (13) LTE Carrier Aggregation Enhancement (13, 14) Support for V2V services based on LTE sidelink (14) Ongoing further enhancement of LTE and eMBMS (13, 14) Examples (SA) Cellular Internet of Things System Enhancements (13) Dedicated Core Networks (13), Enhanced Dedicated Core Networks (14) User Plane and Control Plane Separation (14) Support for Virtual Network Function (Management and Operation) (14) Broadband Mission Critical applications – Video and Data (14)

Conclusion 3GPP has a work plan and proceeds to execute it as foreseen. Decisions will be taken from December 2016 through 2017 to prioritize certain features and capabilities for Phase 1 (Release 15). It is too early to anticipate when and how decisions will be taken for Phase 2 (Release 16, IMT-2020 submission).
