The Roman Empire in 100 AD Modern Europe

Key Terms Government Ruled from 63 BC – 14 AD Empire: A large area of land or territory ruled by a single powerful leader called an “emperor”. Augustus: Rome’s first emperor. He established, or set up, the powers that future emperors would have.

Citizens Only Roman citizens were allowed to wear togas. People who were allowed to participate in the government. Could hold offices or vote. Had to pay taxes, and males served in the military. Being a citizen in the Roman empire was honorable.

Question Time – Write these after the notes you just took. 1. Review your notes and create a question that can be answered by the information found there. 2. Review your notes for a second time and create a question that relates to the information but cannot be found in your notes. Discuss your questions with your group.

Roman Advancements Engineering Aqueducts are like canals. Roads Aqueducts Bridges Stadiums

Architecture Related to engineering. The art of designing buildings. Wanted their buildings to be strong AND beautiful. Used columns, open spaces, domes.

Art Portrait found in Pompeii Created realistic statues and paintings. Created very lifelike portraits.

Philosophy Cicero, a Roman philosopher Wanted to show how the world really was. Wanted to improve life. Told people how they should behave to be happy. Stoics taught the people should focus more on being good and less on what they owned. Act for the good of the group, not for personal gain.

Christianity Spreads Romans didn’t think that Christianity would catch on and spread. Instead, it spread quickly and Roman leaders were worried. They tried to stop it. In the 300s a Roman emperor became a Christian and later emperors made Christianity the official religion. The church began to influence Rome’s leaders. The pope was a huge influence.
