MODULE 11 INTRODUCTION TO SENSATION AND PERCEPTION Jonathan Lee AP Psychology February 22, 2015

YVAN EHT NIOJ – FIND THE SUBLIMINAL MESSAGE 

SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES USED IN MARKETING   Inspire Learning – Let‘s draw subliminal messages! Embed a subliminal message into the sketchpad.

SENSATION VS. PERCEPTION  Sensation: the process by which our sensory receptors and nervous system receive and represent stimulus energies from our environment. Think denotation. Bottom-up processing is the analysis that begins with the sense receptors and works up to the brain’s integration of sensory information.  Perception: The process of organizing and interpreting sensory information, enabling us to recognize meaningful objects and events. Think connotation. Top-down processing is the information processing by higher-level mental processes, as when we construct perceptions drawing on our experience and expectations.

WHAT DO YOU SENSE AND PERCEIVE?

ABSOLUTE THRESHOLD Psychophysics: (psychology + physics) : the study of relationship between the physical characteristics of stimuli, such as their intensity, and our psychological experience of them. Absolute Threshold: The minimum stimulation needed to detect a particular stimulus 50 percent of the time. Decipher this graph show on the right ->

CAN YOU HEAR THIS? DOG WHISTLER.  Signal Detection Theory: a theory predicting how and when we detect the presence of a faint stimuli (“signal”) amid background stimulation (“noise”). Assumes that there is no single absolute threshold and that detection depends partly on a person’s experience, expectations, motivation, and level of fatigue. WahhH!!! Woooh Woooooh!!
