CULTURAL REFERENCES The Executioner’s Song Movie in 1982 Story of Gary Gilmore's murders Based on the true story of murderer Gary Mark Gilmore, spanning the last nine months of his life (May January 1977) in which at age 35, after being released for serving a long prison term in Utah for armed robbery, the unstable Gilmore murdered two men in two seperate and senseless robberies in which after a brief public trial in October, he was sentenced to death by firing squad which drew a lot of media attention when Gilmore insisted that his execution be carried out and he became the first man to be executed in the USA since the government reinstated the death penalty in 1976

DIFFERENTIAL- ASSOCIATION THEORY The definition of differential-association theory is “People’s behavior is largely determined by the company they keep.” Gilmore was influenced by his community, family, and group of friends. His father had been a criminal in all of Gary’s life so all he knew was bad behavior. His dad was violent and abusive so Gary had to toughen up just to become violent himself. Gary never escaped violence because he started to hang out with friends who were like him. His friends were into stealing and drugs and so was Gary. School was never a safe place for him because all people saw him as was like his criminal father. Gary’s family never had good values or morals put into the house because his mother was never a strong women. She was abused by her husband and scared to do anything about it. All Gary had to look up to was his father who didn’t give him the time of day. When Gary was younger he didn’t know what his father was doing was wrong so when he grew up, he hung around the bad kids he did because that was the normal for him. Gary had been influenced to be deviant from a young age which turned into violent crimes and for him the violence will never stop.
