He said:

You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” Deuteronomy 6:4,5 “ Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, ‘Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land which the LORD has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall give it to them as an inheritance. The LORD is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.’” v Deuteronomy 31:7,8

Death of Moses (Deut. Ch. 34) Introduction “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” Deuteronomy 6:4,5 Then the LORD said to him, “This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it.” And Moses the servant of the LORD died there in Moab, as the LORD had said. The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” Deuteronomy 6:4,5

Deuteronomy is One of Jesus’ Favorite Books: He Quotes It 7 Times QuotesDeuteronomy & Jesus “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” Deuteronomy 6:4,5 At the end of his forty days in the wilderness Jesus quotes the book of Deuteronomy three times (8:3; 6:16; 6:13) to rebuff the devil’s temptations. And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.’” Matt. 4:3,4

Deuteronomy Foretells the Coming of a Prophet Like Moses QuotesDeuteronomy & Jesus “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” Deuteronomy 6:4,5 The LORD said to me, ‘They have spoken well. I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. Deut. 18:18 By the End of Deuteronomy the Prophet Had Not Arrived Since that time no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face….. Deut. 34:10 Luke Contends Jesus is the Prophet For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you. Luke 3:22

Summary of the Book of Deuteronomy Summary Israel is camped on the plains of Moab just east of the Jordan River, poised to enter the promised land. The generation that came out of Egypt has all died except for Moses, whose death is imminent, and Joshua, an obedient spy and Moses’ successor and Caleb the only other obedient spy. Moses preaches three sermons which review (Chs.1-3), expand (Chs.4-30), and finally renew (Chs.31-34) the covenant the Lord had made with the exodus generation at Mt. Sinai (Horeb). These sermons exhort Israel to be faithful to the covenant so that it may go well with them in the land of promise. “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” Deuteronomy 6:4,5

Themes in Deuteronomy Themes “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” Deuteronomy 6:4,5 The prophetic office of Moses The Promised Land Blessing for obedience; curses for disobedience The exclusiveness of the relationship with the Lord

Deuteronomy, Covenant, Land and Purpose Application “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” Deuteronomy 6:4,5 “The purpose of covenant in the Hebrew Bible … was never simply that the creator wanted to have Israel as a special people, irrespective of the fate of the rest of the world. The purpose of the covenant was that, through this means, the creator would address and save his entire world. The call of Abraham was designed to undo the sin of Adam.” N.T. Wright
