Summary of the Book of Deuteronomy Summary Israel is camped on the plains of Moab just east of the Jordan River, poised to enter the promised land. The generation that came out of Egypt has all died except for Moses, whose death is imminent, and Joshua, an obedient spy and Moses’ successor and Caleb the only other obedient spy. Moses preaches three sermons which review (Chs.1-3), expand (Chs.4-30), and finally renew (Chs.31-34) the covenant the Lord had made with the exodus generation at Mt. Sinai (Horeb). These sermons exhort Israel to be faithful to the covenant so that it may go well with them in the land of promise. “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!
