CHARISMATIC LEADERSHIP MAYRISKA GIBRANIA ANANDITA

Derived from the word kairismos, in Greek meaning someone who blessed and inspired by the great “A charismatic leader is a leader with amazing personal capabilities, perform a radical vision to solve a problem, attract followers who believe in his vision and feel that he is very outstanding ”– Weber, 1947

THE THEORIES CHARISMATIC LEADERSHIP

True beliefsNo doubt Gladly submit Emotionally involved Motivated

A need for power will motivate leaders to try to influence their followers Self-confidence and a strong position will increase the confidence of the followers of the judgment and opinion of these leaders

Create a good impression Provide an attractive vision Always try to motivate the followers Set an example to be followed Express the confidence towards followers

Conger and Kanungo (1987) suggests a theory of charismatic leadership that is based on the assumption that charisma is a attributional phenomenon. They stated that the attribution of charisma by followers depends on several aspects of leader behavior.

Must have the skills and expertise Timing is critical Sensitive to the followers & environmental needs

Defend a vision that incompatible with status quo Act unconventionally to achieve the vision Devote attention to the interests of the group Have confidence Use personal power and persuasive requests

Their assumptions about human motivation, among others:  The behavior is an expression of one's feelings, values and self- concept and goal-oriented and pragmatic  Self-concept consists of a hierarchy of identities and social values  People are intrinsically motivated to strengthen and maintain self-confidence and their self-worth  The person is intrinsically motivated to maintain consistency between the various components of their self-concept and the concept themselves with behavior

Clearly convey an appealing vision Communicate expectations Improve social identification with the followers Conduct a role model Willing to sacrifice and do the unconventional

Robbins (2005) explained that the research shows that individual traits are also linked to charismatic leadership, which are: Open Confident Achievement Oriented

Robbins (2005) said that a person can learn to be charismatic to follow the process consists of three stages, namely:  Someone needs to develop an aura of charisma by maintaining an optimistic perspective, using patience as a catalyst to generate enthusiasm, and communicate with the whole body, not just in words.  Someone to attract others by creating bonds that inspire others to follow suit.  Someone spread the potential to his followers by touching their emotions.

Poor inter-personal relationship Negative impulsive and unconventional behavior Negative impression management Weak administration practices Negative consequences of self-confidence Fail to plan for successor

“Together with the positive charismatic leader, the followers have the potential to experience psychological growth and development of their capabilities and the organization will be able to adapt to a dynamic, conducive, and competitive environment” – Yukl, 2001 Charismatic leaders are usually able to create a positive culture that success-oriented (Harrison, 1987) and high-performance system (Vail, 1978)
