I TALIAN R ESTAURANTS I N B ANGKOK The Roman Empire might be a thing of the past, but the Italians are still invading the rest of the world; this time not with their armies, but with their food. Bangkok is a recent area of conquest and there are now over 200 Italian restaurants to be found in the city. They range from tiny little places designed for a quick bite to upscale emporiums frequented by those with thick pocketbooks and high expectations. We recently visited several of Bangkok's leading Italian restaurants and decided to describe some what we discovered.

Italian food of signal quality, along with an admirable wine list, served in a relaxed and peaceful setting. Comfortably situated since 2004 on a small lane leading off Sukhumvit Soi 27 and 31, Enoteca Italiana has a peaceful garden and homelike atmosphere that makes it a haven of warmth and conviviality rarely encountered in the frenetic chaos known as Bangkok. Jojo is a beautiful restaurant within the equally elegant St Regis Bangkok hotel. Conceptualized as a contemporary lifestyle Italian restaurant, Jojo serves fine Italian cuisine, cooked with a pared-back but modern style, with an emphasis on authentic ingredients, imported directly from artisan producers in Italy. The interior design features the extensive use of travertine, the attractive building stone mined in Italy and popular since Roman times, for the floor tiling, wall cladding and bench tops. Scalini appeals to diners looking for an Americanized form of Italian dining, it was meant to serve Italian food as it is prepared by Italian Americans, but this has been dropped in favor of “modern Italian cuisine.” The interior of Scalini is modern and dimly lit, but rustic and filled with lots of brown wood and interesting lighting. It is reached by a staircase and dominated by a large brightly lit open kitchen. There are numerous food and wine displays that give it some Italian character. SCALINI AN I TALIAN FINE DINE

Italian food is regional in character and most the food and much of the wine served at Lenzi is Tuscan. The restaurant itself is very traditional with ochre colored walls, leather seats, an open kitchen and an impressive walk-in wine “cellar”. Perhaps the highlight is a wood-fired oven where many of Lenzi's signature dishes are prepared. It is not inexpensive, but the quality of what is offered makes it a bargain. It is within a ten minute walking distance from the Ploenchit BTS station. LENZI TUSCAN KITCHEN

An excellent restaurant for enjoying quality Italian food with a contemporary flare and superb plating, but without the formality of a fine dining venue. Located on the 2nd floor of a modern wooden building with a Southern California feel La Bottega di Luca has a few seats in an air conditioned dining room and the remainder on a greenery filled terrace immediately in front of the restaurant. Gianni Ristorante presents a classically modern, timeless face to the world that is reminiscent of what you find in a New York City restaurant that has been around awhile. It is elegant without being oppressively so and is filled with people in a variety of attire. Colorful artwork adorns the walls and adds a little spark to the surroundings.
