Aim: What are the Harmful Effects of Acid Rain? DO NOW Explain what you think is the meaning behind this picture.

Acid Rain Rain that is acidic in pH value ( ) Rain + acids Q: What pH values are acidic? Q: Can you think of something that has a similar pH value as acid rain?

Cause of Acid Rain Air pollutants mixing with water vapor in the atmosphere Air pollutants are sulfur and nitrogen compounds (sulfur dioxides, nitrogen oxides) Factories burn fossil fuels & these pollutants are released into the atmosphere

Effect on Water Ecosystems Negative effects are seen in water ecosystems Acid rain kills algae & fish, as well as other organisms  Biodiversity Loss Decomposition rates are higher Decomposers use up oxygen in water ecosystem  this kills more animals and plants (suffocation)

Other Negative Effects of Acid Rain Buildings damaged (limestone, marble) Statues damaged Machinery damaged Plants die (acid rain enters soil) Human health problems  if harmful pollutants enter lungs, can cause asthma or bronchitis (respiratory problems)

Solutions to Acid Rain Smokestack (chimney) scrubbers should be installed on industry smokestacks  help to remove most pollutants that cause acid rain from being released into the atmosphere

Homework Read txt. pg. 127 on Acid Precipitation & answer the following questions: 1. Why are sulfur and nitrogen compounds released into the atmosphere? 2. How does acid rain affect soil quality? 3. Which areas of the United States would most likely have acid precipitation problems?
