Jeffery Deaver An American mystery/crime writer born on May 6, 1950 outside Chicago, Illinois. His mother was an artist and his father was an advertising writer. The Empty Chair is the story about a man named Rob Jenkins. Working hard, smoking too much and drinking a lot of coffee made him nervous. He then went to see a doctor and the doctor advised him to have a holiday at Cornwall. Next weekend Rod decided to go to Penquay, a small fishing village on the north coast of Cornwall. There were no trains or buses to Penquay, so he had to drive. It was a long journey, and he arrived late on Friday evening so he went straight to bed after the landlady of the guest house, Mrs Doone, answered the door and showed him to his room.

9 o’clock next morning, Rob woke up and have breakfast with Mrs Doone and her daughter, Catherine. While Mrs Doone prepared the breakfast, Rob asked Catherine about the fourth chair at the table. She said it was her father’s place (a fisherman believed lost three years ago), and her mother made breakfast for him every morning with the hope he will come back. Catherine then showed the photograph of her father on the wall. Right after that, a tall man with a black beard (the man in the photograph) walked into the room. Rob looked terrified, he jumped up and ran out of the room. The man asked about Rob, Mrs Doone said Rob was a guest from London, and for Catherine, she said:’’ he's here because he's very nervous. He says he's hiding here because a tall man with a black beard is trying to kill him.’’ the man said:’’ Catherine, have you been telling stories again?’’
