NWS aviation weather services collaboration effort - Enhance graphical forecasts instead? - Create gridded products? - We have a chance to create consistency between us… …except we’re on all the different platforms (N- AWIPS, AWIPS-2, and IC4D) - All AWIPS-2 - C&V grids… start here - Expand that to WFOs… i.e. start with CONUS grids and let WFOs modify for local and meso scale climates, etc., and then send back - Expand that to turbulence, icing, etc. in the future.. Beginning  text FA product being retired as per the FAA’s requirement HFO and AAWU face the same requirement Digital Aviation Services (DAS) effort and overall consistency

 Started at the 2015 OCONUS meeting in Anchorage  Don Moore’s request for more GOES-R/JPSS Proving Ground participation  20% of AWC satellite liaison time to be spent on AAWU related PG activities  aviation and satellite focus  Eric Stevens and Carl Dierking, High Latitude PG liaisons, collaborating  Alaska satellite experts  Started 6 month in person visits to the AAWU and CWSU in September of 2015:  Set up the 2016 AAWU demonstration plan  Icing products  Various C&V RGBs already in operations  Also support any other satellite related issues noted by the AAWU if possible AAWU collaboration

 Evaluating GOES-R/JPSS products with the AAWU and Anchorage CWSU forecasters  For 2016:  Flight Icing Threat  now in AWIPS-2 in AR  Various C&V RGBs and imagery  In person trip to AAWU with Eric Stevens May 2-6 th  Roughly two thirds of AAWU forecasters trained or at least spoken to on shift, more at the AWC testbed earlier in 2016  Icing  Several RGBs  All Anchorage CWSU forecasters trained  Also helped with some generic satellite operations issues  Icing products already being utilized for AAWU operations  May 6 th, 2016 over Deadhorse in freezing rain AAWU collaboration

Collaboration beyond in person:  Continued examination and evaluation of cases as collected and shared by AAWU forecasters  Feedback share via Google form survey (thank you to Michael Folmer for the basic structure)  Bi-monthly chat with AAWU forecasters and SOO  1-hour webex/phone chat for liaisons and the AAWU  Case studies using imagery already available in AAWU ops  Various scientific discussions on satellite products (Volcanic Ash, smoke, dust, icing, etc.)  Caveats to products in operations (day/night band ‘gotchas’, icing weaknesses, etc.  Generic satellite operations issues  Forecaster question and answer time – providing an opportunity to ask any satellite related question AAWU collaboration

{ Broader collaboration Working with Honolulu

 HFO participated the 2015 Summer Experiment and 2016 Winter Experiment; will possibly participate in the 2016 Summer Experiment  For Digital Aviation Services effort  AWC staff been out to visit Honolulu several teams in order to further explore the future of aviation services  Proving Ground  some icing cases surrounding Honolulu being explored  It’s rare, but icing does happen in the tropics  Examining the icing algorithms for potential use  Further collaboration in the future? HFO collaboration

{ Where do we go now? Summary & the future

 AAWU  Began collaboration in September 2015 after the OCONUS meeting in June  Very successful so far with a great group of forecasters!  Hope to continue collaboration in conjunction with the FA transition and Digital Aviation Services efforts  Will continue to work with the AAWU and ZNC to support the GOES-R/JPSS PG activities, including after launch  HFO  Only a broad collaboration right now  Idea tossing  Hope to establish closer collaboration as part of the FA transition and Digital Aviation Services effort  Will continue to explore Hawaii icing cases and other avenues of PG activities with AWC Summary & Future Work
