Mike Jeanes Road Safety Time Bank

Who is developing the Road Safety Time Bank? –in partnership by – LARSOA – Devon County Council – Knowsley MBC – Lincolnshire County Council – Norfolk County Council – Northamptonshire County Council – Nottingham City Council – DfT

What is the Road Safety Time Bank? –An on-line facility for all road safety professionals which recognises that: everyone has something to learn and everyone has something to offer –A register of good practice and a clearing house for casualty reduction expertise in the UK and Ireland

What does it offer? –the opportunity to learn –access to expertise and knowledge –peer support All provided on a NO FEE basis

Who is it aimed at? – Local Highway Authorities and their partners, including: road safety officers, managers, safety engineers, crash investigators and data analysts. also some police, fire and rescue officers, and other partners typically found in wider road safety partnerships.

How many authorities have joined? –At present over 100 Local Highway Authority road casualty reduction teams are supporting the Road Safety Time Bank and over 40 of these have created trading accounts –More are joining every week

What subjects are covered? – Everything for which Local Highway Authority road casualty reduction professionals are responsible including: Education, Enforcement, Engineering, Use of data and intelligence, Road Safety Strategies – And the subjects covered can and will expand with every new member.

So you’ve registered – what next? –Build your home page Look at others on the RSTB Decide what you want to promote Fill in the forms and upload case studies – Now you are able to start trading

How do you trade? –What are the issues you are facing Find a RSTB member who is offering their good practice and support Read through their case studies Make an initial contact Book time through their home page for an exchange of good practice or a visit

How much time would I need to give? –Only what you think you can manage and not less than you think you may need to take. –Even a few days will give you access to valuable training, support or knowledge. –Members could start with between 5 and 10 days (or as few as 2) per year and adding to (or subtracting from) that according to need. –You can still ‘take’ time without giving it.

What sort of trading is taking place –Visits to learn about partnerships and governance –Visits to look at individual ETP issues –Visits to look at on the ground engineering solutions –Visits to look at data gathering, information systems and consultation

What if the help I need is not offered? –We think the Road Safety Time Bank will offer the best possible chance of finding in one place the support that you need. –Use the ‘ I need help ’ facility to ask all members for help.

Our next steps –Comprehensive take-up by all Local Highway Authorities in UK and Ireland by March 2009 –Further development of Road Safety Time Bank to meet growing needs –Extensive trading between members –Transition of Road Safety Time Bank to LARSOA by March

Your next steps Make sure you are registered IF you’ve registered, make sure your home page is set up, and some time set for trading go back to the office and get your best projects on as case studies Use the Road Safety Time Bank to improve your performance- start exchanging experiences with other road safety professionals
