The Element of Value The lightness and darkness of tones (grays) and colors.

Value Value makes objects appear more real because it imitates natural light. When showing value in a work of art, you will need a LIGHT SOURCE.

Vocabulary Light Source- area in which light is originating from. Gradation- gradual changes from light to dark. Highlight- the brightest light reflections on a subject. Shadows- area where light doesn’t hit. Cast shadows- the shadows made on the ground by an object.

Shading Techniques used to achieve values in your work Blending/Smudging Hatching Cross Hatching Stippling Scumbling Random Hatching Contour hatching

Blending making values blend smoothly and gradually together. Also, referred to as “Smudging”.

Hatching creating values using parallel lines.

Cross-Hatching creating values with lines that cross one another.

Stippling adding values by using dots.

Scumbling adding values with a meandering line, layers of small scribble-like marks.

Random Hatching uses layers of short, straight marks built up to show value or texture.

Contour Hatching creating values with lines that follow the contour of a shape to create a 3-D effect.

Examples of shading Techniques

Graphite Pencils H pencils have harder leads and are used to make lighter values. B pencils have softer leads and are used to make darker values. By using a variety of pencils different values can be achieved.

A good graphite drawing should have at least 7 values in it.

Showing strong differences in light and dark creates contrast.

You must include at least one detailed insect in your work. You should follow the guidelines in the Emphasis/Focal Point presentation to create a focal point in your work. You must use graphite pencils and include a minimum of 7 values in your work. Work should be high quality with excellent craftsmanship. Final paper size is 12”x18”.
