Todays class Questions from last week (Freud) Psychosexual stages of development Adler – Birth order Jung – persona’s  Introversion Vs. Extroversion 22

Core personality formed by the age of six through a series of psychosexual changes Childhood erotic urges have a lasting effect on development Fixation is a result of failure to complete a particular stage transition

Stage 1 Oral : Ages 0-1. The infant receives its pleasure from oral stimulation. If a child is overfed or frustrated, oral traits will develop.

Stage 2 Anal : Ages 1-3. Attention turns to process of elimination. Child can gain approval or express aggression by letting go or holding on.

Stage 3 Phallic: Ages Child now notices and is physically attracted to opposite sex parent. Oedipus complex. Electra Complex.

Latency: Ages 6 – Puberty Psychosexual development is dormant. Same sex friendships and play occur here

Stage 5 Genital : Puberty-on. Realisation of full adult sexuality occurs here; sexual urges re-awaken

Alfred Adler Initially a follower of Freud Broke away to form new theory but still believed that the unconscious played a major role in our behaviour

Alfred Adler  Striving for Superiority: Basic drive to help us towards perfection  Compensation: Any attempt to overcome feelings of inadequacy or inferiority  Creative Self: Humans create their personalities through choices and experiences

Adler’s Birth order Only child First born Second born Youngest Twin Ghost child Adopted Only boy Only girl Gap between 31

Karl Jung Freud’s most intense follower Spiritual role in development Archetypes  Persona’s Introversion/ Extroversion

Jungian personality types Collective unconscious Symbolize human motivations Similar to horoscopes in structure  Ego type- hero, care giver, the innocent, orphan 33

Introversion/ Extroversion Two opposing forces which direct the way we see the world Preferred ways of dealing with the world  Sensing –using our senses to obtain information  Irrational function based on perception rather than evaluation of information  Thinking – logical evaluation of information  Rational function – as information is processed and accessed  Intuition – complexed perception  irrational but integrates large amounts of information  Feeling- logical evaluation with emotional input 37
