VILLAGE OF SHOREWOOD PPII REDUCTION PROGRAM

Shorewood’s response to the 2010 flooding has been direct and decisive Immediately start identifying problems and develop response strategies Adopt a comprehensive three prong approach Increased pipe sizes for flow capacity: new sewers Reducing inflows in the public sewer mains: sewer lining Reducing inflows in the private sewer laterals: lateral lining Shorewood remains focused on the implementation of all three approaches.

Inflow & Infiltration into the sewer system is the source of excessive flows Problem Inflow and Infiltration (I & I) has been identified in the sanitary sewer system, allowing rainwater to get into the sanitary sewers during heavy storms. This can be enough to overwhelm the sanitary system and cause basement back-ups. Goal Reduce Inflow and Infiltration (I&I) long-term for back-up protection for 4 inches of rain in 1 hour (GOAL 2).

How does clear water enter sanitary sewers ? PPII reduction is an important component of our response Our laterals are as old as our homes – cracks and offset joints are common. A typical block in Shorewood has about 700 feet of public sewer main, and with about 22 sewer laterals, about 1,400 feet of private laterals. PPII reduction targets the stopping of groundwater leaks into private laterals by lining these laterals.

What will happen next? Steps in lateral lining. 1. Determine the location of your lateral 2. Install a cleanout in your front yard (as close to the building as feasible) to help with lining 3. Clean and televise the lateral to prepare for lining 4. Line the lateral Mobilization time needed between step 1 and 2 Steps 2 and 3 can be considered as a continuous process Lead time of several weeks between steps 3 and 4

Determining the location of your lateral A remote controlled camera is sent into the lateral from the nearest manhole. The camera transmits a signal and can be located precisely from the surface. What you will see: Camera truck parked on the street, near a manhole A worker with a receiver wand in the front yard The lateral alignment will be marked with an unobtrusive wood stake or paint mark

Installing a cleanout on the lateral The process requires access to the pipe at either end of the liner. One end of the liner is the mainline, remotely accessed from the manhole. The other end of the liner is at a new access point; i.e., cleanout, on the lateral. This is an alternative to using an existing cleanout, usually located in the basement. Location of the cleanout is as close to the building as possible while avoiding landscaping, etc.

Cleanout installed over the lateral Once the epoxy glue cures, the lateral is cored and access is established. With the cleanout in place, the lateral is televised and cleaned in preparation of lining.

Final completion includes site restoration, capping, and burying the cleanout Lawn is restored over the cleanout State Code requires that the cleanout is permanently capped and buried to prevent future access

Infiltration/Inflow Reduction The result is a clean and hydraulically efficient lateral – better than new. No gaps, cracks, or openings mean no root intrusions that require plumbing service calls. Reducing clear water in the sanitary sewer system increases protection against sewer backups during rains.
