OVERVIEW OF E-LEARNING/PBL PROJECT - KNUST By : Prof. William Oduro

OVERVIEW OF PROJECT The BSU E-Learning and Problem Based Learning Project (E-L & PBL) is part of the Building Stronger Universities (BSU) program supported by the Danish International Development Agency. To strengthen institutional capacities in e-learning and in problem based learning at BSU partner universities in Ghana and Tanzania. The project is partnered with Denmark Universities

PROJECT ACTIVITIES In order to be able to measure the extent institutional capacities have been strengthened by the project, a base line study was carried out as one of the first activities to be undertaken in the project. The immediate objective of the Mapping was: Overview of existing policies, strategies, practices (formal as well as informal), capacities, resources, experiences and needs in the areas of e- learning and PBL within BSU South partner universities -KNUST WORK PACKAGE 1 : Mapping

PROJECT ACTIVITIES Nine KNUST task force made up of ICT and pedagogical specialists in e-learning and PBL received training in PBL pedagogies and course development. The team participated in all ToT organized by the Northern Partners. WORK PACKAGE 2 : Specialists Training

PROJECT ACTIVITIES WORK PACKAGE 2 : Specialists Training Professor Monalisa Dahms of the Aalborg Centre for Problem-Based Learning, Leading the specialist training session at KNUST. The capacity of the task force was built to a level where they can train their peers from other Departments/Faculties.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES The Project carried out a mass sensitization and awareness creation on the need to adopt and implement PBL and e-Learning on KNUST Campus. – All Staff Workshop (Teaching and Non-Teaching) – Graduate Students – Teaching Assistants WORK PACKAGE 3 : Teachers and courses Group of Senior Staff after a ToT training on KNUST Campus

PROJECT ACTIVITIES Training of trainers course in e-learning and PBL principles, pedagogies and techniques were organized for selected staff of all 6 Colleges in the University. PROJECT ACTIVITIES Staff were trained in PBL pedagogies and course development to a level where they can train their peers in their respective colleges. WORK PACKAGE 3 : Teachers and courses Prof. William Oduro leading a ToT training at KNUST

PROJECT ACTIVITIES A number of conferences and seminars have been held to build collaboration and exchange of knowledge on e-learning and PBL pedagogy established. PROJECT OUTPUTS PBL Awareness have Increased over the course of the Project – 850 Senior Stuff Members Introduced to PBL pedagogies during KNUST Summer School – 675 Graduate Students participated in PBL/E-Learning Forum during the graduate school week – 341 Teaching/Research Assistants were introduced to PBL/E-learning SOME ACHIEVEMENTS

PROJECT OUTPUTS 86 KNUST teaching staff competencies in designing courses into PBL/E- Learning format achieved A total of 52 courses have been redesigned to apply PBL and 23 have been implemented as at end of semester 1 (December, 2015). The New KNUST draft policy captures a section on PBL for staff assessment SOME ACHIEVEMENTS

PROJECT OUTPUTS Local, National and International conferences held. These have created impact and influenced many affiliate universities and regional universities e.g. Nigeria, to adopt the E-Learning/ PBL approach Increased individual publications for promotion and possible enhancement of KNUST visibility and ranking. Individual presenters’ confidence and networking improved evidenced by increased attempt to apply for conferences. SOME ACHIEVEMENTS

PROJECT OUTPUTS KNUST E-Learning /BPL Task force to be established in all colleges. PBL Studios to be established in all Colleges to provide continuous training of staff in PBL/E-Learning course design WAY FORWARD
