When teachers commend students for special effort, the desired behavior is reinforced.

Three Management Styles Authoritarian  Regulations and consequences for everything  Teachers control behavior by exerting power  May result in low student self esteem and creativity Permissive  Some rules and expectations  Enforces consequences inconsistently  Anything goes  Students may lack respect for teacher Authoritative  Shapes student behavior through setting high expectations, rules, and consistent consequences  Teachers are firm but friendly

Establishing Rules/Procedures  Establish rules during first few days of class  Involve students in setting rules/procedures  Keep the rule list short  State rules and procedures in positive terms  Define the terms  Adjust the rules/procedures if they are not working

Minimize problem behaviors by:  Helping students develop personal responsibility  Using routines  Assigning seats  Monitoring the classroom  Using nonverbal cues

How a teacher reacts to problem behaviors affects students’ attitude towards the teacher and shapes future behavior

Teachers must respond the same way to similar situations. Students know when consequences are applied fairly.

Techniques for Problem Behavior  Using nonverbal cues  Asking student a question related to the lesson  Inserting the students name into the lesson  Stating clearly what the student should do and walk away  Taking focus off the situation

When dealing with serious behavior  Keep records  Involve parents/guardians  Utilize school resources
