SUSE ® Presentation Guidelines and Template

SUSE ® Presentations Welcome to the guidelines and template for SUSE presentations. The following information will be covered: ‒ Guidelines (slides 3-7) > Template Instructions > Color Palette > Graphics and Typeface > Editorial Guidelines > Slide Trademarking Guidelines ‒ Presentation Template (slides 8-12) The instructions in this template are not comprehensive. For more information on Novell branding guidelines, visit

Template Instructions For more information on Novell presentation guidelines, visit: This slide outlines the basic guidelines and instructions to help you use the SUSE ® presentation template. ‒ Delete this slide and all guideline slides (1–7) before projecting, presenting or sending to a client. ‒ To ensure that Web searches can be done properly please edit the file properties: » OpenOffice: Click on File, Properties; under the Description tab, change the Title of the template to the title of the presentation you are creating or updating. » PowerPoint 2003 (XP): Click on File, Properties; under the Summary tab, change the Title of the template to the title of the presentation you are creating or updating. » PowerPoint 2007 (Vista): Click the Microsoft Office Button, point to Prepare, and then click Properties; in the resulting toolbar, change the Title of the template to the title of the presentation you are creating or updating. ‒ When inserting slides into this template from other presentations, you will need to go to the template's master page and update each inserted slide so it reflects the SUSE style. ‒ If you are converting charts and diagrams from Microsoft PowerPoint to OpenOffice.org Impress, you may not be able to edit them once they are in the.ODP format. If this is the case, the graphic must be re-created. ‒ The goal of this template is to maintain a clear, professional and consistent tone and appearance among all SUSE presentations. The default text boxes in the presentation represent the margins or “working area” into which all text, graphics and diagrams should conform. These margins are not arbitrary, and they are not meant to constrict creativity; when used correctly, they keep the slides focused and leave enough white space so audiences can easily digest the presented material. If you need more room than the margins allow, we suggest moving content to another slide.

Color Palette For more information on SUSE color palette guidelines, visit Colors: Approved RGB colors for SUSE ® presentations have been outlined to ensure color accuracy. Margins: The gray dotted-line box represents the margins or “working area” into which all text, graphics and diagrams should conform. How to Add SUSE Colors to Your OpenOffice.org Color Palette: 1. Go to the “Tools” menu 2. Select “Options” 3. Expand “OpenOffice.org” 4. Select “Colors” 5. Delete existing colors (one by one) 6. Add SUSE Colors by giving them a name and entering RGB values 7. Editorial Guidelines To help you achieve a consistent, professional message, general guidelines about SUSE ® style and grammar usage are outlined below. ‒ Acronyms: Do not use acronyms, and do not abbreviate product names. ‒ Capitalization: The title of the presentation and the title and subtitle of each slide are the only elements that should be capitalized in title case. All other elements should be capitalized in sentence case (only the first word of each sentence capitalized). This includes bullet points, call outs, emphasized words, table headings and captions. ‒ Hyphenated compounds within titles: If a hyphenated compound appears in a title, capitalize the word following the hyphen; for example, “Low-Cost Alternatives” would be capitalized as shown. ‒ Bulleted lists: To set off the lead text in bulleted lists (the words “Bulleted lists” in this case), use colons. Try to keep information presented in bulleted lists short, so it is easy for audiences to consume. ‒ Punctuation within bulleted lists: Be consistent when punctuating bulleted lists. For example, if you choose to use a complete sentence in the first bullet, use complete sentences, and punctuate accordingly for all bullets on that slide. ‒ General punctuation: Use “and” instead of “&” except in proper names (e.g., AT&T). Write out percent signs. For more detailed information, see the Novell Writing Guidelines at

Slide Trademarking Guidelines Trademarking guidelines for presentations are different from the guidelines for other types of communications. The following are basic rules for trademarking within a presentation: ‒ General trademarking: Each slide should be trademarked separately in case the slide is used in multiple decks or pulled from one slide deck to another. (This differs from the usual guideline of trademarking the first reference of a product, solution or program name in a document.)‏ ‒ Product trademarking: Novell ® products, solutions and program names should be trademarked on all slides. This will help us ensure legal rights for these names. ‒ Third-party trademarking: When referencing third-party companies (Linux, Red Hat, HP, etc.), do not use an asterisk or the third-party company's trademark. ‒ Trademark design: Trademarks should be large enough to be recognized, but small enough so they do not distract from the content. ‒ Trademark placement: The registered trademark symbol ( ® ) should go on the baseline of the text. The trademark and service mark symbols (™, SM ) should be arranged so that the top of the symbol is level with the top of the last letter of the word being marked. ‒ Trademark size: As a general rule, after setting the trademark text as subscript or superscript, make the mark one quarter (25 percent) the size of the accompanying text. (Subscript and superscript are set within the "Character" dialog box in OpenOffice.org Impress and the "Font" dialog box in Microsoft PowerPoint.)‏ For more information on slide trademarking, visit
