The Lincoln Family camped over night here in downtown Decatur on a spot near where this small tree is located now.

The Lincoln campsite was right across from the future site of the Macon County Court House, where Lincoln would later practice law.

This site, near the small tree on the parkway, is where Abraham Lincoln and his family spent their first night in Macon County Illinois. They camped in their wagons here, at the center of the new town, Decatur, Illinois. This area is now known as Lincoln Square. The next day, guided by their relative, John Hanks, they settled on a bluff overlooking the Sangamon River about 10 miles to the west of this location. They established a 10 acre farmstead in what is now Harristown Township.
