The Boeing Effect With their 2009 purchase of its facility near the Charleston airport, “Boeing became the biggest economic development story in the state’s history…..The aircraft giant’s growing presence in the area has been like a magnet for other industry firms.” (CharlestonMag.com, March 2015) “Since Boeing’s arrival in SC, the aerospace cluster has added the same number of direct jobs per year as the automotive industry did between 1997 and 2007 following the arrival of BMW.” (SC Council on Competitiveness, 8/2014) “The state’s aerospace cluster has…one of the highest annual growth rates in employment of all industries in SC over the last decade, an average of 11.4%, approximately 8 times higher than the 1.4% average annual growth rate for the state overall.” (SC Council on Competitiveness, 8/2014) 9

Creating A Pipeline SC Initial Career Assessment 10

· Dilemma: How do we get more students interested in manufacturing related STEM majors, which lead to the majority of the higher paying careers in our area? How do we ensure that our employers will have the skilled workforce they need to ensure their future success?  Solution: Partnerships between our Technical Colleges & their service area K-12 Schools that are aimed at enriching the student’s STEM learning environment and getting more students interested in manufacturing related STEM majors.  Resources available to assist OCtech’s Partnerships:  College Admissions Counselors, College Faculty, High School Instructors, Guidance Counselors, & PLTW network  Perkins Funds, Industry Support, NSF-ATE, RPOE, PBI, and other grants (as well as college funds)  College Equipment & High School Facilities The Dilemma & Solution 11

 Provide experiences that schools wouldn’t otherwise be able to provide  Provide additional training and resources for teachers  Minimize barriers between districts in need and quality STEM opportunities  Ensure pipeline of students for college STEM programs of study  Increase the number and quality of graduates with the tech skills needed by industry *The Career Pathways Effect (2012); CORD & NASDCTEc Advantages of STEM Partnerships 12

 Addresses the Person-Environment Fit approach to career counseling  Do the student’s individual characteristics (i.e. needs, values, & abilities) match with the environmental characteristics of their desired career (i.e. demands, rewards, and setting)?  Providing additional STEM opportunities can allow students to sample various work environments to help inform their eventual choice in a career path. Advantages of STEM Partnerships *The Career Pathways Effect (2012); CORD & NASDCTEc 13

 Use a Progressive Career Counseling based framework to provide STEM opportunities for all ages  K-5: Outreach efforts to promote career AWARENESS  6-8: Short-term and long-term STEM opportunities to promote career EXPLORATION  9-12: Dual enrollment STEM programs and other hands-on opportunities to promote CAREER PREPARATION Promoting STEM in K-12 Schools 14

 K-5: STEM outreach programs to promote career awareness:  Provide STEM outreach efforts to:  Get kids excited about STEM and seeking out other opportunities outside of the classroom.  Supplement classroom instruction with hands-on resources  Make STEM learning fun! STEM in K-5: Promote Awareness 15

 OCtech’s activities included:  Wind Turbine Workshop  Robotics Workshop  Classroom Presentations  Interactive College Campus Tours  Adopting a local Elementary school  Partnering with 4H, Girl Scouts, and other organizations for programming and events. STEM in K-5: Promote Awareness 16

 After School, Summer Camps, and other opportunities:  First Lego Workshops and Robotics Camp  PLTW Gateway To Technology Camp  Alternative Energy Camp  FIRST LEGO Competition  STEM Ten80 RC Racing Camp  4H Engineering Challenge  Participation in quality STEM programs outside of school:  Improves attitudes toward STEM fields and careers  Increases STEM capacities and skills  A higher likelihood of graduation and pursuing a STEM career STEM in Grades 6-8: Promote Exploration 17

STEM in Grades 6-8: Promote Exploration 18

 Middle College Opportunities  Dual Credit Pre-Engineering Major Using Nationally Recognized PLTW Curriculum and Statewide Standardized Two-Year College Course Numbers:  Intro to Engineering Design (EGT 152)  Principles of Engineering (EGR 130)  Digital Electronics (EET 140)  Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM 131)  Hands-on STEM activities for High School College & Career Fairs  Engineering Field Day & Career Fair  Guidance Counselor STEM Workshops STEM in Grades 9-12: Promote Career Preparation 19

History of Middle College In 1996 OCtech began conducting middle college courses on a small scale—one class offered in one high school. Today, OCtech's Middle College allows ambitious high school students in Orangeburg and Calhoun counties the opportunity to earn college credits before they graduate. Courses count toward high school requirements and translate into college credit hours for a two-year or four-year degree.  Middle College students make up 19% of the College’s overall enrollment  Classes are offered at high schools, online, and on campus  Middle College Pathways increase enrollment and serve as an early feeder program for new and emerging industries in our area 20
