Strengthening Student-Teacher Relationships Plan by Centennial High School SSIT: Student-Staff Relations Committee

Agenda 1.Review main points from last Building Student-Staff Relations PIP Session 1.Analyze Student Survey: What Centennial students want to see in teachers and how they can be incorporated into what teachers want or the class a.Handouts a.Feedback 1.Watch Student Documentary a.Feed back

Why are Student-Teacher Relationships important? They increase Student Engagement ●Student Engagement in turn helps: ○Students stay in school ○Students earn higher grades ○Schools become safer Building Student Staff Relationships Pt. 1 Review

Building Student-Staff Relationships PIP Session Pt. 1 Review Cont. How to build relationships with students 3 Steps: 1.Basic positive interaction 1.Get to know students 1.Challenge and mentor Students

What Students Want: Analyzing Student Survey Data From Centennial In order to gain a better understanding of the importance of Student- Teacher Relationships specifically at Centennial, we conducted a student survey analyzing: ● The effect of positive student-teacher relationships on academic achievement ● How students would like their teachers to build relationships with them

Quick Fact: Qt. 2 79% of Students who took the survey said they had better grades in classes where they had positive relationships with their teachers

Quick Fact: Qt. 7 60% of students who took the survey would like their teachers to ask them about their extracurricular activities

71% of Students said that the teachers they had positive relationships with made sure that the students understood the content Quick Fact: Qt. 9

Quick Fact: Qt. 5 83% of Students said that they would like their teachers to conduct more engaging activities in class

Quick Fact: Qt. 10& 11 Only 43% of students believe teachers take into account students’ individual learning style Only 37% of students believe that teachers take into account students’ demanding academic schedules when assigning due dates

What conclusions have you drawn from the survey? What are some ideas you have to incorporate Centennial Students(based on the survey) needs into your own classroom goals? Discussion

Conclusions: What Centennial Students want from teachers 1.Positive relationships 1.More engaging classes 1.Consideration of academic schedules 1.Consideration of individual learning styles

“Ask if teachers are giving tests on the same day” “ Asking general questions, making individual conversations” “Asking if everyone understands, because sometimes I have a question but I feel like it's stupid so I don't want to ask it especially when it seems that everyone else understands.” “Please help me when I don't understand something rather than calling me out in front of the entire class” Teachers could be friendlier sometimes. “To get personal and recognize the existence of each student in their class. or at least try to” “Not every student is the same. Take into account that we all need different learning styles. Also, don't make us feel stupid.” “Take into account student schedules including extracurriculars etc. which take up much time out of students schedules” “Teachers should not say "This is an AP level class" or "This is a college level class"more than 5 times in a school year.” “ have more individual conference time with students” “Make a better culture within the classroom. There are teachers in this school who have very hostile environments in the classroom that makes it hard to be confident.” Student Suggestions on How Teachers Can build relationships with them….

One Suggestion I have for more engaging activities in class is... “ Outside class” “more group activities” “Save time in class for students to ask as many questions as they need” “Games (like jeopardy)” “graded class work; it engages the entire class in working together toward a common goal. It is more helpful when trying to understand the material” “Study hall” “use students as examples to keep the class interested” “Let the students stand up and move around the classroom instead of making them sit for the entire school day. “

Student Documentary

In the past two weeks how often have you actively remembered or tried to build relationships with students using your team initiatives? What motivates you? Discussion
