Acid-Base Properties of Salt Solutions Chapter 8.6

Salts: Acid-Base Properties Salts: an ionic compound that contains cations and anions in a repeating crystalline structure Salts are electrolytes – they dissolve into ions when they dissolve in water Aqueous solutions of salts can be neutral, acidic or basic Neutral Solution: neither H+ nor OH- are produced Acidic Solution: increased concentration of H+ ions Basic Solution: increased concentration of OH- ions Hydrolysis: a chemical reaction of an ion with water to produce an acidic or basic solution by the production of H+ or OH- ions (i.e. “Splitting” of the water molecule)

When is a Salt Solution Acidic or Basic?
