Basic knowledge of poetry A rhyme refers to the repetition of sounds at the end of rhymed words. If two words or lines of poetry rhyme, they end with the same sound, for example sky and fly, high. A rhythm is a regular repeated pattern of sounds or movements. Rhythm is the beat that runs through the lines in a poem. Generally a rhythmic pattern is made up of four lines, which is called a stanza.
