BIM Toolkit Content Outline An unusual project Existing content Areas to add Methodology Gap analysis LOD / LOI aligned to stages of plan of work Content added Examples Challenges Questions?

BIM Toolkit Content An Unusual Project Mott MacDonald is a 16,000 strong global management, engineering and development consultancy with capabilities from traditional civil engineering design to the running of education systems. In the engineering sectors we are typically working on projects physically within built environment. But this was developing free-to-use reference content for all companies in the UK to use on their projects.

BIM Toolkit Content Existing Content RIBAE have developed NBS Create over many years. Starting as a Building Specification the scope of NBS Create has expanded from architectural, building services and structures to provide a comprehensive coverage of buildings and associated infrastructure.

BIM Toolkit Content Areas to add It was a client objectives that the BIM Toolkit covered the whole of the built environment. Mott MacDonald used the following technical disciplines (practices) to produce content: Aviation, Bridges, Highways, Power, Rail heavy, Rail light, Tunnels, Waste, Water

BIM Toolkit Content Methodology To dedicate three civil engineers for 6 months: Trained by RIBAE in the detailed content and style of RIBAE’s Technical Content Store. With an understanding of the breadth of existing content. Interfacing with internal experts to agree gaps and new content to author. Authoring the content with reference to standard documentation and with experts’ input and checking.

BIM Toolkit Content Methodology We identified representative systems and products for one set of graphic images to cover a range of content. Had a team of technicians to produce images to the required style.

BIM Toolkit Content Gap Analysis Start with an overview – such as a mind map.

BIM Toolkit Content Gap Analysis Start with an overview – such as a mind map. Determine what systems and products are in a sector.

BIM Toolkit Content Gap Analysis Start with an overview – such as a mind map. Determine what systems and products are in a sector. Review against existing RIBAE content. eg for a railway line, already have : –Earthworks –Drainage But didn’t have: –Rail track, –Sleepers, –OHLE

BIM Toolkit Content Levels of detail aligned to stages of the plan of work Traffic Signal System Stage 2 Stage 3

BIM Toolkit Content Levels of detail aligned to stages of the plan of work Stage 4Stage 5 Traffic Signal System

BIM Toolkit Content Levels of information aligned to stages of the plan of work Stage 3 – Provide information relevant to the specific performance of the deliverable –Wind loading Standard, Special requirements and Design criteria. –Signal visibility Visible distance (minimum), Legible distance (minimum) and Fog penetration (minimum). Traffic Signal System

BIM Toolkit Content Levels of information aligned to stages of the plan of work Stage 5 – Provide information relevant to the specific child products of the deliverable to allow for purchasing. Information covering the completion and execution of the deliverable and its child products should also be provided. –Provide information about… primary traffic signals, secondary traffic signals, traffic signal controller, vehicle actuation, posts, fixings, foundations, cabling, ducting Stage 6 – Provide the information specific to the installed deliverable that is required for operation and maintenance. Traffic Signal System

BIM Toolkit Content Content Added In six months Mott MacDonald created the following content: –160 system outlines –486 product clauses –74 sets of graphics

BIM Toolkit Content Unit Lined Tunnel System

BIM Toolkit Content Jet Blast Screen System

BIM Toolkit Content Bridge Expansion Joint System

BIM Toolkit Content Challenges The detail of the work lead to challenges which stemmed from the “ground breaking” nature of the project, and were magnified by the tight timescale, eg: Adapting information from experts/standards to the NBS hierarchy of systems and products – difficult to define some objects with a simple list of criteria. Difficult to standardise methodology as the various sectors had different quality of information available. What worked in one sector didn’t work in others.

BIM Toolkit Content Challenges Sometimes one expert could cover many objects, sometimes one expert would be needed for one object. Six month turnaround to identify experts (with availability and knowledge), understand the scope, author content and produce graphics All these work streams were running in parallel, as was development of classification & DPOW / graphics for existing content – a challenge to ensure consistency across the board.

BIM Toolkit Content Challenges Understanding whether objects are systems or products, this can be quite a grey area. Difficulties in checking what is covered by existing content – ie is existing content applicable and “application neutral” enough to be sufficient for the identified object.

BIM Toolkit Content Dry Well Centrifugal Pump

BIM Toolkit Content Bridge Bearing

BIM Toolkit Content Weighbridge

BIM Toolkit Content Rail Platform System

BIM Toolkit Content Questions? Any Questions?
