Presentation transcript:

Five Components of a Computer Input Device – keyboard, scanner, PDA/stylus, digital camera, mouse, MP3 player, fax machine, microphone Storage Device – hard drives, floppy drives, jump/thumb/flash drives, cd’s and dvd’s Output Devices – monitors, printers, speakers

Five Components of a Computer CPU – Alternately referred to as a processor, central processor, or microprocessor, the CPU is the Central Processing Unit of the computer. The CPU handles all instructions it receives from hardware and software running on the computer. Memory – any physical device capable of storing information temporarily or permanently.

Vocabulary (in alphabetical order) Folder- a virtual location where programs, files, and other folders can be located Hard drive- A hard disk drive is a non-volatile memory device that permanently stores and retrieves information. A hard drive consists of one or more platters to which data is written using a magnetic head, all inside of an air- sealed casing. Keyboard- the primary input devices used with a computer that looks similar to those found on electric typewriters, but with some additional keys.

LAN- sometimes called the Ethernet port, network connection, and network port, the LAN port allows a computer to connect to a network using a wired connection Monitor- output device of a display screen Network – two or more computers linked together through a server to share resources such as software, printers, and files. Other advantages are that you can log on from different locations and you can back up all your files on one computer.

RAM- also referred to as main memory, primary memory, or system memory, Random Access Memory (RAM) is a hardware device that allows information to be stored and retrieved on a computer Save – saves the changes with the same name in the same location Save As – saves the file with a new name in a specific location (usually used for new files) Server – main computer that manages the network and stores the files Software- a collection of instructions that enable the user to interact with a computer, its hardware, or perform tasks

USB- Short for Universal Serial Bus, allows a computer to communicate with other devices. USB-connected devices cover a broad range; anything from keyboards and mice, to music players and flash drives. Word processor – allows you to create a document that can be edited (changed or corrected) – also has textwrap/wordwrap
