London Underground November 28 th Tube Strike

What was the reason for the industrial dispute? -The strike is part of a protest against plans to cut 800 ticket office jobs. -The cuts will see over 250 jobs axed over 250 ticket offices all over the network. 2010

How was it handled by employers? More than 100 extra buses were provided, temporary taxi ranks, and the capacity for over 10,000 extra journeys on the river in boats. Planned road works were delayed/ done in between rush hours in order to avoid complications Alternative routes were marked to avoid road works, and some areas were cordoned off so that people did not have to slow down when walking past these areas. TFL also organised volunteers to be positions at points around the city, such as near tube, bus and rail stations, as a way to provide maps and information to commuters to ease their journey. The major, Boris Johnson, said ‘Londoners have shown that they will not be deterred from their daily business’ 40% of the tubes were still running during the strike – only the Circle Line was fully out of order – others were partially running.

How was it handled by employees? Strike – members of the RMT decided to go on strike as a way to prove their point Union busting Lockout

2010 Was an industrial action threatened or carried out? Industrial action refers to any measure taken by trade unions or other organised labour, in order to reduce productivity in a workplace. The RMT decided to strike on several days throughout November 2010, mainly on November 28 th. This strike was a way for the union members to show that they have power and would not allow the job cuts to continue. By the majority of members striking, its shows unity and power

How successful were the employees? The rail, maritime and transport union have another two strikes planned for June 27 th and July 1 st 2011, despite their 6 hour long strike on Sunday 19 th June. This could suggest that employees have not been as successful as they first thought. Not much has been achieved through their striking action. According to the managing director Mike ->
