What’s Your Function By Patrick Nishyirembere A senior operations manager at Spokes of Hope Worldwide

Outline 1. What is Management 2. Functions of Management 3. Management Styles

Definition of Management  Management This is the act of engaging with an organization’s human talents and its resources to accomplish desired goal and objectives("Principles of Management," n.d.).

Five Functions of Management  Planning It ‘s an act of thinking and organizing the activities required to achieve strategic objectives ("Principles of Management," n.d.).  Management tasks associate to Planning  Example: if you are a manager at a certain company and you organize a workshop for your employees with an aim of increasing the company’s production. This is a planning because manager has a strategic objective to achieve after the workshop.

Five Functions of Management  Organizing This is an act of creating a pattern of relationship among the workers, optimizing the use of resources to accomplish the business’s objectives("Principles of Management," n.d.).  Management tasks associate to Organizing If you are a manager and you organize a picnic out of the office. At that time employees get a chance to know each other and develop their relationship. From that event, coworkers work as team to accomplish business objectives.

Five Functions of Management  Leading This is a way of leadership by which a manager uses to achieve a certain outcomes ("Principles of Management," n.d.).  Management tasks associate to Leading If a manager chooses a certain strategy to lead his people and achieve a certain goal. For example if a manager choose to let people work independently and gives good results. This is a form of leading called laisse-faire.

Five Functions of Management  Staffing Is when a manager choose to train workers for a certain specific job ("What is staffing? definition and meaning," n.d.).  Management tasks associate to staffing For example if in an organization wants to change their technology. It requires a manager to choose some staff member who will be trained for the new system so that they will be able to accomplish their new tasks and boost the outcomes of business.

Five Functions of Management  Controlling Is the way manager uses to control the performance of workers and try to address deficiency("Principles of Management," n.d.).  Management tasks associate to controlling Example: Manager has responsibility of checking if the workers are working towards their duties. In Bank a manager can control a teller if she is giving customer care to the clients.

Three primary management styles  Directing This is a style where manager tells the employees what to do, how to do it, and when it needs to be done. No participation of workers in decision making (Freifeld, 2013).  Scenario that can be applied to this style This can be used in place where they work under pressure of deadlines. The manager has to inform everyone what to do, in order to control well who is doing what he or she is supposed to be doing.

Directing style  Strengths  It makes works faster  Save time  Avoid the misuse of resources  Weakness  Omit the freedom of expression to employees  Discourage innovation at the work place.

Three primary management styles  Delegating This is a style promotes learning through empowerment. With this style, the manager assigns tasks to employees to work independently, either individually or in groups(Freifeld, 2013). Scenario where they can be applied In time when there is an emergency in a company, and the manager wants to get multiple solutions. It might be good for a manager to assign everyone what to do, in order to get everything on time.

Delegating style Strengths  Happiness in the company  Build self-confidence of employees  innovation Weakness  Take longtime to make decision  Delay time to accomplish the tasks

Three primary management styles  Discussing This is a style which promotes learning through interaction. The manager work as facilitator through the discussion of critical thinking to come up with strong responses and everyone contribute to the solution(Freifeld, 2013). Scenario where this can be appropriate If in a company workers are claiming to get an increase in their salaries. It should be a meeting of all in order to discuss about the adjustments of their salaries. It is the agreement of all of them which will drive to the decision.

Discussing style Strengths  Collaboration  Work for the same goal  Brings innovative ideas Weakness  Overuses of resources  Take longtime to make decision  Hard to respond in emergency
