What is VET? Definition: Vocational Education & Training VET is a national system of industry-specific training designed to skill people to work in particular fields eg plumbing, hospitality, IT.

Why choose a VET pathway? If you want to enter a trade (eg.plumber, chef) If you may not be interested in going to uni If you are struggling with academic subjects If you want to get started in your area of interest (eg. mechanics; floristry, media)

Benefits of VET pathway Points towards QCE (Cert II 4 pts, III 6-8 pts) Nationally- recognised qualifications & trades At present you can still get into university as Certificate III, IV & Diploma Qualifications can be converted to a ranking equivalent to an OP of 15 or better Diplomas can give you up to 12mths credit off a Bachelor

4. On-line Courses Benefits – don’t have to leave GLC Campus Drop a subject gain 4 x 50 min study periods Work on-line on Certificate course in study periods More likely to be able to do both VET and OP Down side: Self-paced. Need to be motivated! TAFE or Private RTO

Managing your Time Option to drop a subject (recommended) You must find out what class work you missed by looking in Egrace or ask your teachers. Catch up in your own time or in study spares Time to act like an adult and manage your time and take responsibility for your studies Let VET Dept know if you feel like it is all getting too much – support is available!

Getting Started Fill in Permission to Undertake Vocational Training Form Nominate area of interest on SWL form Make an appointment with Ms Jones VET DEPT. If you know employer who may offer work exp or SAT – refer to VET Dept. Find a placement or Placement Officer finds one Start with Wk Exp or Wk Trial – May be convert to SAT

What then? Wk exp – usually 1 day per week for wks Work trial – up to 3 days in row VET Dept may be able to convert to SAT VET Dept advertise vacancies in daily Student Memo, Newsletter, etc. You can be proactive and start approaching employers yourself Success – SIGN UP
