HUMANS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT MORE HUMANS = MORE WASTE = MORE POLLUTION

The rapid growth in the human population as well as an increase in the standard of living has led to increasing amounts of waste production. More pollution will be caused unless this waste is handled properly. Use pages to answer the following (1 and 2) 1.How do people reduce the amount of land available for other plants and animals? 2.What substances commonly pollute: a)Water b)Air c)Land? 3. Describe the effects of pollution on the water, air and land. Pages may help.

DEFORESTATION _BY

DEFORESTATION This is….. the destruction and removal of areas of woodland/forest. The main areas of the world this is occurring on a large scale is in tropical rain forests. Why is deforestation occurring? For timber For agriculture/farming - planting crops to produce biofuels (based on ethanol) - rice fields to provide more food - space to farm cattle

THE MAIN ISSUES/PROBLEMS WITH DEFORSTATION 1.Increased release of CO 2 into the atmosphere by ……. and microorganisms ………………… 2.Reduction in the rate at which CO 2 is removed from the atmosphere and ‘locked up’ for many years, because less trees = less ……………… 3.Increased production of methane gas by cattle and rice fields. Why is this a problem? 4.Reduction in biodiversity. Which means?

PEAT 1.What is peat? 2.What are the two main uses of peat? 3.Why is the destruction of peat bogs and the use of peat (as above) a problem? 4.Can you think of any other issues with destroying large areas of peat bog? 5.‘Peat free’ composts are now readily available. Why do may gardeners still not use these ‘greener’ alternatives to the traditional peat compost?
