What’s Polio? Scientific Name: Poliomyelitis (GREEK TERM) This disease affects brain and spinal cord severe infectious viral disease, usually affecting children or young adults, and inflames the brainstem and spinal cord, sometimes leading to loss of voluntary movement and muscular wasting

What’s the cause of this disease? Polio has only one cause, which is an infection with the POLIOVIROS This disease affects the brain and spinal cord

In India, polio is a popular disease of infancy and childhood, about 50 per cent of cases are reported in infancy the most vulnerable age is between 6 months and 3yrs of age Polio is more likely to occur during the rainy season Approximately 60- percent of cases recorded in India were during June to September What’s the target Population?

Polio affects the CNS by slowing or completely ruining the coordination of activity in the body Polio affects the PNS by slowing or ruining the process of allowing your brain to transferring instructions to you limbs

Symptoms? As the Polio enters the human body, its feels as if it’s a regular cold. As time progresses you feel weak and you may diagnose Polio with the Flu

 Poliovirus is usually spread through contact with stool of the infected person (a.k.a fecal-oral transmission).  Not common but, poliovirus is spread through contact with infected respiratory secretions or saliva (oral-oral transmission).  Following polio transmission, a person does not become immediately sick.  A person who is infected with polio can spread polio about 7-10 days before symptoms begin  A person can continue to spread polio for about three to six weeks after the beginning of polio symptoms.  However, a person is most contagious for the days after symptoms of polio have begun. What to look out for?

The Prognosis? People with minor illness recover completely, and most people with major illness who were paralyzed can recover Even though you can recover completely from polio symptoms, polio leaves behind some damage. As you age, your nervous system may become less able to compensate for the damage that polio caused, so symptoms may gradually reappear

Is their a Cure? Thankfully there is a vaccine for Polio However, if you were to catch this disease there is no cure therefore other methods are used: Increasing comfort Antibiotics Ventilators to help with breathing Moderate exercise and diet
