English 9: Class 11 Idioms / parallel sentences / lens chart / review rubric / begin summative VIP

Idioms A figure of speech used to mean something other than its literal meaning Yay! John Green is here to TELL US ABOUT IDIOMS!John Green is here to TELL US ABOUT IDIOMS

Parallel Sentence Structure What does the word “parallel” mean? Extending in the same direction and never crossing; similar

Parallel structure in words: choose all nouns, all verbs, all adjectives, etc. My best friend is loyal, kind, and impulsive. (all adjectives) My best friend is loyal, shows kindness, and often impulsive. (adjective, verb phrase, adverb-plus-adjective)

Phrases work the same! Yay! Ralph loves playing football, sketching portraits, and strumming the guitar. (Each phrase uses an –ing form of a verb and a direct object, aka gerund phrase) Ralph loves playing football, to sketch portraits, and the guitar. (gerund phrase, infinitive phrase, noun) Focus on STRUCTURE (don’t worry about the labels)

Clauses can be parallel too (YES!)! If you love me, if you need me, if you trust me, then show it with your actions. All three begin with subordinating conjunctions (when, who, whom, whenever, after, since, etc.) I think of you whenever I eat strawberries, whenever I dance to a slow song, and whenever I look at the stars. I think of you whenever I eat strawberries, times when a slow song plays, and sitting outside under the stars.
