Synthesis Essay (1st Major Grade of 3rd 9 Weeks) DUE TUESDAY, JANUARY 13TH MUST BE UPLOADED TO Please get out the following: ● A piece of paper ● pen or pencil ● 2 different colored highlighters (mine are up front to borrow)

Create a T-Chart on your paper... On the one hand: college is worth the cost. On the other hand: college is not worth the cost.

Read & Annotate each article. Each of the following is required to receive an annotation grade: 1.Highlight the source citation and put in parenthesis what should go in a in-text citation. 2.Chunk 1-2 paragraphs at a time and annotate off to the side: a.The main idea, your opinion, a statement, etc.Find 4 words per aryou don’t know, circle and define each word. 3.Highlight at least 2 statements/statistics/information that could be used to defend either side of the argument. a.Label if it is for or against the argument 4.At the bottom of the article, write a response or reaction to what you just read. a.Do you agree or disagree with the article and why.

Complete T-Chart: List 2-3 reasons for both sides of the argument. Is college worth the cost? Why & Why Not?

What is your position on the argument? Write your thesis statement, make your position and reasons clear. 1.In today’s society college is worth the cost because… 2.Depending on what your career goal is, there is reason to think whether college is or is not worth the cost due to...

Introduction: a.Provide background information or set up the reader to understand your argument better. a.Establish your thesis: make your position and reasons clear and specific.

CITE ALL SOURCES PROPERLY! Body Paragraphs 1 and 2: (8 sentences min.) ● Topic sentence: introduce your argument. ● Provide at least 2 piece of evidence from the sources provided. Remember this is here to SUPPORT your argument, not be the main focus of your paper. ● Establish and discuss your argument further. ● Conclude paragraph with a reference to your thesis and why what you discussed proved your point.

3rd Body Paragraph: ● Start with the counterargument, provide a piece of evidence that someone might use to argue against your side. ● Then go in with a strong piece of evidence to prove that argument wrong and why your position is still the more valid argument.

Conclusion: “If you can’t imagine dropping the mic after the final sentence of your essay, your conclusion needs to be stronger!” ● Review your main points. ● Leave the reader thinking! Provide a statement that will make an impact with what you are trying to prove in your argument!
