The Water Planet The global ocean covers 71% of Earth’s surface Landmass covers 29% of Earth’s surface

Fresh Water Water that is not salty and has little or no taste, color or smell. scenery.cultural-china.com

Salt Water Water that contains dissolved salts and other minerals.

Salt Water vs.Fresh Water 3% 97%

Less than 1% of fresh water is available to humans What about us?

The Water Cycle The continuous movement of water through the environment of Earth.

Process of The Water Cycle Evaporation – the process in which water changes from liquid to water vapor.

Condensation – the process in which water vapor in the atmosphere becomes liquid.

Precipitation – water that falls from clouds.

Percolation (infiltration) – the slow passage of liquid from the surface to underground via a filtering system.

Runoff - the movement of land water to the oceans, normally in the form of rivers, lakes, and steams.

Transpiration – the release of water from the leaves of plants
