Summarizing: The 3rd Basic Skill in Peer Helping (After Empathizing and Attending)
What is summarizing?? Summarizing is a skill that involves listening completely to the person’s own concern and then repeating the situation back to the person with a different perspective on it.
Importance ❖ People with problems often want good feedback from their helper and in order to do so one must be a good listener. ❖ You must capture the important thoughts and feelings expressed to you and be able to give back.
Remember... Body language is 60% of communication and tone is 20% !! ❖ Use a soothing tone ❖ Have open body gestures ❖ Be comforting & understanding Also!! Some people like to think out loud (Extroverts), and some people like to think about things before talking (Introverts). Know how to work with both!
