E Major E Form (G Major Chord)

E Form Major Scales 3 This is the scale form that you should start with. It is the easiest of the patterns to Finger. It falls totally into one position and does not have a stretch outside that Position. The next form you should work on is the A form. Then the C, G and Lastly the D form. G A B C D E F# G A B C D E F# G F# E D C B A G F# E D C B A G Say the names of the notes while you play them. Yet another way to learn the names of the notes. We will do this very slow at first!!

Review - Finding Notes on the Guitar Fingerboard There are many relationships that can help you with this task. Visualization is really one of the main keys to this. Remember the tuning of the guitar as one of the first steps, also the notes on the open strings. Every 12 frets it repeats. So one technique is to visualize the 12 th fret as the nut of the guitar. The chromatic scale is also a big help.

Write the names of the notes on each string. Use the chromatic scale and each fret up is one place counter-clockwise on the chromatic scale. E Notice that the first & 6 th string have the same Letter names!!

E E A D G B E Notice how the 12 th fret is exactly the same names as the open strings. Make sure that you know both the open strings and the 12 th fret names! A D G C E A Notice that the notes on the 5 th fret are the same as the open strings moved down one string with the exception of the 5 th fret 3 rd string is a ‘C’ (one ½ step higher due to the tuning of the guitar)!!! At this point you should now know the 12 th and the 5 th frets. Also start to think about the other notes using the chromatic scale.

Another relationship is that the notes on the 5 th string are the same as the ones on the 6 th string but up 7 frets. This relationship follows each of the pairs of strings other than from the 3 rd to the 2 nd string and then it is 8 frets up. Now see how the 5 th string and 3 rd string are offset by 2 frets just the same as the 6 th string and 4 th string. By now you should be getting the idea of this. I hope that by next week you can figure any note out on the guitar fingerboard. Now get to work Write out the examples like I did in these handouts. Work on the various relationships until you have them down perfect. Try to visualize the fingerboard and think of the names of the notes. Work on this every single day for the next month and you will have it down!!!!

Here are the 6 th root power chords. Take your time and memorize them. These can be used against all Major, Minor and Dominant (7 th ) chords. Will not work on augmented or diminished chords but since those are rarely used in rock and popular music it isn’t much of an issue. These power chords only have 2 different notes to them the root and the 5 th note of the scale.

This is the 2 nd set with the 5 th string root chords. Between the 2 sets you now should know all the notes on the 6 th and 5 th strings. This also gives you the notes on the 3 rd string as the note you play on the 3 rd string is the same as the name of the note on the 5 th string. By now you should be getting where the notes are on the 6 th, 5 th, 4 th and 3 rd strings and since the 6 th and 1 st strings have the same name you also have the notes on the first string.

Let’s try a song using just power chords!! For this song we will play just F, Bb, and C power chords. F is at the 1 st fret, Bb at the 6 th fret and C is at the 8 th fret. 4/4||: F | | Bb | | C | | Bb | : || Now twice as fast. 4/4||: F | Bb | C | Bb : || This could be a song such as The Joker.

For the power chords in this song. G is at the 3 rd fret, C at the 8 th fret and D at the 10 th fret. Not that is difficult for most players so use the 5 th string root power chords. On those the C is at the 3 rd fret and D is at the 5 th fret. Do the G as a 6 th root at the 3 rd fret th root C Root

1 43 Power Chords Here are the notes on the 4 th string. Use this to really learn the notes and visualize that there are 2 roots to these power chords! This is very important. Your goal for next week is to learn the names of the notes on the 1 st, 4 th and 6 th strings. That will put you about ½ way through learning the notes. I don’t expect them to be just at your fingertips but that you can figure them out. E F F#,Gb G G#, Ab A A#,Bb B C C#,Db D D#,Eb E

A few comments, h means hammer (optional), p.m. doesn’t mean in the evening but ‘palm mute’. For that you slightly mute the strings with the back part of the palm of your picking hand.

In the book lets do “Born to Be Wild” For the E power chord it is at the 7 th fret with a 5 th root. Note that this is one where you can hit all the strings as the 1 st and 6 th string open are an E and the 2 nd string open is a B which is also in the E power chord. This is very common to do for an E type chord. Very good song for power chords. Look at tab for introduction.

Do That’ll Be The Day from book For Guitar IV work on the introduction and maybe the solo. Note that this is a shuffle feel. Triplets with middle one as a rest.

Perfect example of why you need to do barre chords. The F#m must be done as a barre.

Beatles do it in D so C = D, F = G and G7 = A7

Another song. Do this as barre in the E Form. This whole song is in the Key of Am but can be related to as C major. The Am is a VI chord, G is a V chord, F is a IV chord. If we did it as Am then Am is a I chord, G is a VII chord, F is a VI chord. But there are some issues with this. Scale to solo is an A natural minor or also called an A Aeolean mode. To change a major to minor in an E form Just lift the 2 nd finger. Am will be at the 5 th fret, G major at the 3 rd fret and F major at the 1 st fret. If you can’t do the Barre chords at this time that is fine just play the regular chords. This song is in 4/4 time and each chord gets 2 beats.

Correct Picking Hand Position. The right hand position is important in order to get not only a good tone but to play progressively more difficult pieces. If you are right handed the thumb needs to be in front of the other fingers (to the left). Have it ready to hit the lower pitched strings (4, 5 and 6). The fingers should be curved and touching each other. They should be ready to hit the following (index ready to hit the 3rd string, middle finger the 2nd string and ring finger the first string.

Bm Asus 2 Chords for Kryptonite. Notice the Bm and F# are at the same fret with the same basic form. But one is minor and the other major. The Bm has a 5 th string root the F# a 6 th string root. F#

b E7 E7 and Extentions b9 #9 b5 5 #5 11 b3 You can make up chords using this. Try to figure out an E7#9. Note that you can leave out some of the notes in the chord. The two notes that you can’t leave out are the 3 rd and the 7 th. They must be in each chord. Finding extensions to chord.

Look how stands are Please put the music stands back how they were when you came in. Really important as if we don’t we may lose ability to use the stands! Look how they are stacked. There are 3 to 4 on each side of the upper section and the other stands are stacked 2 high.

For The Next Class The E form of the CAGED chords and scale. The Power chords – Born to be Wild Start memorizing the names of the notes on guitar Work on correct right hand position. Fingerpicking should be mastered by now. Start Blackbird. Do 1 st page. Start on Extensions. Play the songs that we went over tonight. Study the theory and play all of the songs we went over. Play Kryptonite.
