Welcome to Introduction to Chemistry! Please take a Pre-Assessment from the stool and complete it to the best of your ability. This will not be graded.

Housekeeping Bellwork What you need for class Materials I provide Agenda Board Call outs Food/Drinks/Gum in lab Plagiarism Hall passes Dismissal If you are absent

Introductions (Choose three of these) Where are you from? What do you do outside of school? Do you have any pets? Do you play sports? What do you plan to do after you graduate? What do you like best about science? If you could have any superpower, what would you choose? What is you favorite food?

About this mini-unit: One Learning Target: I can differentiate between qualitative observations, quantitative observations and inferences Why a unit with only one Learning Target?

First Observations Make a list of observations about the picture on the right. What is an observation? What is NOT an observation? Re-create your list of First Observations, sorting out observations and inferences.

Is it important to know the difference between an observation and an inference? Why or why not?

Mystery Tubes With the person sitting next to you, and without removing the tape, make a list of observations about the Mystery Tube. Then, draw a sketch of what you believe the interior of the Mystery Tube looks like.

Syllabus What is a syllabus? Syllabus “quiz” in ten minutes… Read carefully! Questions?

Introductions

Tracks: Observations and Inferences

Procedures: Bellwork Unique Section in Binder; Use your own paper; Date each entry and write out the question Class Format Will vary from day to day Most days will have an independent work time from 2:40 to 3:00 Assessments and Grade Tracking Pre-, Formative, and Summative Assessment Dismissal Class will wrap up at 3:10, and I will state when instruction and discussion has ended. We will be quiet during the announcements.

Lamb to Slaughter by Roald Dahl What do you think this short story will be about, based on the name? Who is Roald Dahl? What genre of story is he most famous for? Read the story slowly. Stop at each questions and answer it, without reading farther ahead.

Qualitative and Quantitative Observations Make qualitative and quantitative observations about this picture.

Chemistry I Notebooks Why notebooks? Have them in class. Every. Day. What if it gets lost? Or stolen? Do I have to?
