European Truck Platooning Conference Amsterdam, 07 April 2016 Liam Breslin Sustainable Surface Transport DG Research & Innovation European Commission Research & Innovation in Automated Road Transport

2 EC funded projects - Overview

EU projects on Automated Driving – Examples 3

SARTRE project  Develop strategies and technologies for vehicle platoons (roadtrains)  Operating on public highways/freeways  No changes to the road and roadside infrastructure  Mixed traffic – shared with non-platoon traffic  Mixed vehicles – trucks, cars  Develop a prototype platooning system  Assess under real world scenarios  Evaluate the environmental, safety, congestion and convenience benefits  Illustrate new business models  Overall concept  Lead vehicle driven by a trained professional driver  Following vehicles will enter a semi- autonomous control mode 7 partners from 4 countries

SARTRE Benefits  Fuel Economy  Reduced drag with shorter distances between vehicles  Benefits for all vehicles including lead vehicle  Safety  Drivers contribute to 87% of road fatalities  Congestion  Better road utilisation from smaller gaps  Smoother traffic flow/reduced traffic dynamics  Driver Convenience  Better use of travel time  Read a book, use a phone or smartphone

Call on "Automated Road Transport"  Key priority in the H2020 Transport Research programme  Indicative budget: € 114 Mio  Publication date: 14 October 2015  Priorities of this new call are fully in line with the Automated Driving Roadmap of ERTRAC  Focus of the Call  Support the short term introduction of automated driving systems for passenger cars, trucks and urban transport  "Large-scale Field Operational Tests" to test technologies in complex traffic and driving conditions 6

Automated Road Transport 7 Safe AD systems in complex traffic situations Detect vehicle location and environment Vehicle-driver interface Road infrastructure User and social acceptance Connectivity for advanced level of automation Automation Pilots R&I priorities
