 Sudden Changes to the Earth  Essential Questions  Destructive Forces of Nature  Lightning  Floods  Hurricanes  Snow Storms  Tornadoes  Preparedness Checklist  Emergency Supply List  Emergency Organizations and Numbers 2

 What should you do during a lightning storm?  Which of the following is not included in a preparedness checklist?  What is a hurricane?  Which items are necessary when preparing an emergency supply kit?  What is a violently rotating column of air? 3

 4 Tornadoes Lightning Floods Snow Storm Hurricane

 Lightning is produced in thunderstorms when liquid and ice particles above the freezing level collide, and build up large electrical fields in the clouds.  The lightning spark can occur between clouds, between the cloud and air, or between the cloud and ground.  During a lightning storm, the safest place to be is in your home. 5  Lightning

FLOODS  A flood is an overflow of water that submerges land.  It is usually due to the volume of water within a body of water, such as a river or lake. HURRICANES  A Hurricane is any wind of the strongest level.  In the United States of America, Hurricane is the name assigned specifically to a tropical cyclone near the Atlantic and East Pacific basins. 6

SNOW STORMS  A winter storm is an event in which the main varieties of precipitation are forms that only occur at cold temperatures such as snow or sleet  Snowstorms are storms where large amounts of snow fall TORNADOES  A tornado is a violently rotating column of air which is in contact with both a cumulonimbus (or, in rare cases, cumulus) cloud base and the surface of the earth.  Tornadoes can come in many sizes. 7

 What to do Before Prepare an evacuation plan Agree on a meeting place Pay attention to warning signs Install alarms  What to do During Remain Calm Position yourself in a safe location Administer first-aid if needed  What to do After Make sure that it is safe to leave Account for everyone Try to contact help 8

 First-aid kit  Flash light  Cellular phone  Vehicle keys  Non-perishable foods  Bottled water  Blanket  Wooden matches  Cold/Hot pack 9
