How the World Sees Canada (2 minutes)

Demography is the study of a country’s population in terms of its numbers and sex (for example: how many males and females are there, what age are they, where are people living, who is working, etc.) (6 minutes, Tom Brokaw)

Census A census is a collection of information from every person in Canada, that tells us the variety of social and economic topics important to the country. These include age, gender, marital status, level of education, ethnic origin, language, work force activities, agricultural activities, immigration, migration, and others. A Census of the Population is done once every five years. The next census is to be done in (2 minutes, Rick Mercer)

Doubling Time is how long it would take for a country’s population to double at the country’s current population increase rate. The shorter the doubling time, the more stress there will be on resources needed to support the growing population. (Population Explosion 5 minutes)

Dependency load is the portion of the population not in the workforce, which includes people under 14 years old, plus people older than 65. This group is dependent on those who do work for services they need to support them (i.e. education, health care, etc.) because they are too young to work and for those who have retired and are no longer working.
