Chapter Thirteen Types of Outline Formats

Chapter Thirteen Table of Contents zFrom Working Outline to Speaking Outline zThe Speaking Outline*

Types of Outline Formats zSpeakers with well-organized speeches are perceived to be more credible than are those with poorly organized speeches.*

From Working Outline to Speaking Outline zIn a working outline you refine your specific purpose, organize main points, and develop supporting points.*

From Working Outline to Speaking Outline zA speaking outline is used when practicing and actually presenting a speech.*

From Working Outline to Speaking Outline zSentence Outlines zPhrase Outlines zKey-Word Outlines zOutline Formats and Speech Delivery*

From Working Outline to Speaking Outline: Sentence Outlines zA sentence outline states each main and supporting point as a full declarative sentence. zThese sentences are usually stated precisely the way the speaker wants to express the idea.*

From Working Outline to Speaking Outline: Sentence Outlines zGenerally, sentence outlines are used for working outlines, and actual speaking outlines are prepared using key-words. zSentence outlines may be used in delivery: yIf the speaker is inexperienced. yWhen the issue is highly controversial. yWhen the material is highly technical. yWhen the material relies on direct quotations.*

From Working Outline to Speaking Outline: Phrase Outlines zPhrase outlines use a partial construction of the sentence form of each point instead of using complete sentences that present precise wording for each points.*

From Working Outline to Speaking Outline: Key-Word Outlines zKey-word outlines convey each main and supporting point with the smallest possible units of understanding, such as a single word or very brief phrase.*

From Working Outline to Speaking Outline: Outline Formats and Speech Delivery zSentence outlines reduce the amount of eye contact the speaker has with the audience, but offer the most protection against memory lapse. zKey-word outlines are easier to handle and follow than are sentence or phrase outlines, but preparation is essential.*

The Speaking Outline zAfter you have completed the full- sentence outline, transfer your ideas to a speaking outline using a key-word or phrase format.*

The Speaking Outline zUse the same parallel structure as your working outline. zUse notecards to organize your material. yUse separate notecards for introductions and conclusions. zThe key to successful delivery is practice.*
