HIV-Human Immunodeficiency Virus: virus that attacks the immune system. AIDS-Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome: disease in which the immune system of the patient is weakened.

Testing for HIV: Only in blood tests-CONFIDENTIAL May take up to 6 months for enough anti- bodies to “show up” Western blot test (common test in US) EIA test that screens for antibodies in the blood. Certain health conditions (hemophilia, hepatitis and pregnancy) can cause false positive.

Can be HIV positive for up to ten years before developing AIDS With AIDS the immune system has been damaged and does not defend the body properly against germs and cancer.

Opportunistic infections- infections that occur in the individuals who do not have a healthy immune system. These infections are difficult to treat Infected individual suffers one illness to another HIV is progressive-destroys immune system cells over time; doesn’t necessarily mean they have AIDS yet.

4 Stages of HIV Infection: (person is infectious immediately after contracting virus.) 1 st stage-Primary infection; person may have flu-like symptoms then disappears. 2 nd stage-Asymptomatic stage=no symptoms. Feels healthy, may last from 6 months to 10 years. Virus is making copies of itself

Continued…. 3 rd stage- Symptomatic stage. Easily tired, loss of appetite, weight loss, night sweats, diarrhea, t-cell count falls below 200 (normally ) 4 th stage-AIDS. One or more opportunistic infections or cancers are present.

Body fluids that HIV is found in: Semen Vaginal secretions Blood Breast milk

NOT in… Urine Sweat Saliva

How AIDS is spread: Sex (oral, anal, and vaginal) Blood transfusion with contaminated blood or blood products. Or contact with blood. Using contaminated IV drug needles or tattooing and piercing. From mother to baby at birth.

How AIDS is NOT spread: Hugging and kissing Sharing a public toilet Insects (such as mosquitoes) Donating blood Getting a blood test Shaking hands Sharing eating utensils Sharing public pools, hot tubs, etc. Sharing a desk, pencil, book, etc.

HIV/AIDS Timeline on Pg. 664 HIV is now a PANDEMIC-global outbreak of infectious disease. HIV/AIDS has NO CURE. In 1988, December 1 st is declared annual World AIDS day.
