2 Why Do It? What is a Credential? The Project Management Institute (PMI®) is the world’s leading association for the project management profession. It administers a globally recognized, rigorous, education, and/or professional experience and examination-based professional credentialing program that maintains an ISO 9001 certification in Quality Management Systems. Earning a professional credential through PMI means that one has: –Demonstrated the appropriate education and/or professional experience; –Passed a rigorous examination; –Agreed to abide by a professional code of conduct; –Committed to maintaining their active credential through meeting continuing certification requirements.  PMI professional credentials — available to members of the Institute and nonmembers alike — are widely recognized and accepted throughout the world as evidence of a proven level of education, knowledge and experience in project management.

4 Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)  The CAPM credential can benefit a wide range of team members who want to increase their performance and skills on project teams. By gaining knowledge of project management processes and terminology, professionals from all disciplines can reach higher levels of performance in their work.  It is a stepping stone towards PMP and PgMP certifications  The CAPM is designed for: –project team members; –entry-level project managers; and –project management undergraduate and graduate students.

5 Project Management Professional (PMP) The PMP is designed for those people that: –Perform their duties under general supervision and are responsible for all aspects of the project for the life of the project –Lead and direct cross-functional teams to deliver projects within the constraints of schedule, budget, and scope –Demonstrate sufficient knowledge and experience to appropriately apply a methodology to projects that have reasonably well-defined project requirements and deliverables.

6 Program Management Professional (PgMP)  PMI’s newest credential is specifically developed to acknowledge the qualifications of the professional who leads the coordinated management of multiple projects and ensures the ultimate success of a program. You will benefit from the many advantages of this new designation. Candidates who earn this credential will be internationally recognized as professionals with the knowledge and experience to make and implement the important decisions and accomplish the strategic objectives that enhance business results.  Candidates pursuing the new credential must meet specific eligibility requirements and agree to adhere to a code of professional conduct. Candidates’ competence will be evaluated through a sequence of assessments: –The initial assessment of competence occurs through the application process. Prior to a candidate becoming eligible to pursue this credential they will be evaluated through an extensive application process including review of education by PMI staff and review of professional work experience by a panel of program managers. –The next step of competence assessment occurs with the multiple-choice exam in which candidates will be called upon to demonstrate their ability to apply their knowledge to a variety of situational or scenario- based questions. –The last competence assessment occurs through a multi-rater assessment in which a team of raters that the candidate selects will evaluate the candidate’s competence in a work environment to perform germane tasks of a program manager as defined through the examination specification.

7 CAPM Requirements  CERTIFIED ASSOCIATE IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT (CAPM®)  If you answer “yes” to all of the questions below PMI recommends that you pursue the CAPM credential. –1. Do you have a High School diploma, Associate’s degree or a global equivalent? –2. Are you a junior project management practitioner or new to project management? –3. Do you have 1,500 hours of work experience on a project team? –4. Have you had at least 23 contact hours of project management education (e.g., courses or programs offered by PMI, universities or colleges, employer or company, distance- learning providers or training companies)? –5. Are you familiar with A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)?  NOTE: If you already hold the PMP credential, you may not apply for the CAPM.

8 PMP Requirements  PROJECT MANAGEMENT PROFESSIONAL (PMP®)  If you answer “yes” to all of the questions below PMI recommends that you pursue the PMP credential. 1.Do you have a Bachelor’s degree or a global equivalent and 36 months of professional project management experience? If not, do you have a High School diploma, Associate’s degree or a global equivalent, and 60 months of professional project management experience? 2.Have you had at least 35 contact hours of formal project management education (e.g., courses or programs offered by PMI, universities or colleges, employer or company, distance-learning providers or training companies)? 3.Do you perform your duties under general supervision? 4.Are you responsible for all aspects of a project or for the life of the project? 5.Do you lead and direct cross-functional teams to deliver projects within the constraints of schedule, budget and scope? 6.Do you demonstrate sufficient knowledge and experience to appropriately apply a methodology to projects that have reasonably well-defined requirements and deliverables? 7.Are you familiar with A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)?

9 PgMP Requirements  PROGRAM MANAGEMENT PROFESSIONAL (PgMPSM)  If you answer “yes” to all of the questions below, PMI recommends that you pursue the PgMP credential. –Do you have a Bachelor’s degree, a global equivalent or higher degree and four years of professional program –management experience? If not, do you have a High School diploma, Associate’s degree or a global equivalent and seven years of professional program management experience? –Do you have at least four years project management work experience? –Do you manage multiple, related projects directed toward a strategic business objective? –Do the programs you manage contain complex activities that span functions, organizations, geographic regions and cultures? –Do you build credibility, establish rapport and maintain communication with stakeholders at multiple levels, including those external to the organization? –Are you responsible for defining and initiating projects, and assigning project managers to manage the cost, schedule and performance of component projects, while working to ensure the ultimate success and acceptance of the program? –Do you maintain continuous alignment of program scope with strategic business objectives and make recommendations to modify the program to enhance effectiveness toward the business result or strategic intent? –Do you determine and coordinate the sharing of resources among your constituent projects to the overall benefit of the program? –Do you possess the knowledge and skills to be effective in the project, business and/or government environments and to make decisions that accomplish strategic objectives? –Do you have advanced skills in finance, cross-cultural awareness, leadership, communication, influence, negotiation and conflict resolution? –Are you familiar with A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) and The Standard for Program Management – First Edition?

10 What is required to achieve certification?  To be eligible for a PMP® or CAPM® credential, you must first meet specific educational and/or project management experience requirements and agree to adhere to a code of professional conduct. The final step in gaining your credential is a rigorous multiple-choice examination designed to objectively assess your project management knowledge. The PMP examination utilizes scenario or application- based questions where practitioners are asked to apply their knowledge to specific situations. The CAPM examination utilizes definition type of questions assessing candidates’ knowledge of project management terms and context in which project management is practiced. Candidates pursuing the PgMPSM credential will be evaluated through a sequence of assessments, including: an application review of education by PMI staff and a review of professional experience by a panel of program managers, a comprehensive scenario or application-based multiple-choice examination, and finally a multi-rater assessment by a team the candidate selects (for example, supervisor, peers, direct reports).

11 Experience and Education Verification Experience Verification Use the Experience Verification Forms to document and report your experience leading and directing project tasks. Experience must have been accrued in the last eight years. Complete one set of forms per project. How do you calculate the months of professional project management experience or hours leading and directing project tasks? Number of Months of Project Management Experience Each month in which you worked on multiple, overlapping projects is to count as one month toward the total months of unique non- overlapping professional project management experience. Number of Hours that You Led or Directed Project Tasks Consider all of the projects that you have worked on and identify how many hours you led or directed project tasks. If you worked on multiple projects at one time, all the hours spent leading and directing project tasks count toward the requirement. 35 Contact Hours of Education Verify at least 35 contact hours of specific instruction that addresses learning objectives in project management. Document all project management education hours, regardless of when they were accrued. The course work must be completed at the time of application. The course hours may include content on project quality, scope, time, cost, human resources, communications, risk, procurement and integration management.

19 The Exam  Exam –The PMP examination is comprised of 200 competency-based, multiple-choice questions. Of the 200 questions, 25 are considered pretest questions. Pretest questions do not affect the candidate’s score and are used in examinations as an effective and legitimate way to test the validity of future examination questions. The pretest questions are randomly placed throughout the exam. –The allotted time to complete the examination is four hours. The examination is preceded by a 15-minute computer tutorial, which is not part of the allotted four hours.  You’ve passed the exam.
