Presentation transcript:

1. How many nutrient groups are there? There are 6 nutrient groups.

2. Better known for his inventions and knowledge of the human body, this 16 th century scientist compared the process of metabolism in the human body to the burning of a candle. BTW, he was so important a ninja turtle was named after him. Leonardo da Vinci

3. What is a macronutrient? A macronutrient is required in large amounts and gives us energy.

4. Give an example of a protein. Beans are a food rich in protein.

5. What is a micronutrient? A micronutrient is required by the body in small amounts and does not give us energy.

6. Give an example of a lipid/fat. Lard is an example of a lipid.

7. Which nutrient(s) give(s) us energy? The macronutrients carbs, lipids and proteins give us energy.

8. What is the preferred source of cellular energy? Glucose

9. Along with fellow Greek doctor Anaxagoras, this philosopher stated, “Let food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food.” He successfully used food to treat illness. Hippocrates

10. If you have Celiacs Disease, what can you NOT EAT? Gluten

11. Why did you take this class? Hmmmm………

12. If you have diabetes, what type of foods should be reduced or avoided in your diet? Carbohydrates especially simple carbs.

13. What is the difference between organic and inorganic molecules? Organic molecules contain the element Carbon.

14. What is “organic food” or “clean eating?” Foods that have not been genetically altered or sprayed with chemicals.

15. What is a GMO? Genetically Modified Organism

16. What is the difference between absorption and digestion? First we digest or breakdown our food and then it is absorbed into the blood stream to be delivered where needed.

17. What is glucose ultimately turned into in the cell to be used as energy? ATP

18. What is C 6 H 12 O 6 ? Glucose

19. Give an example of a mineral. Calcium
